Hugo's last book and the most inspirational of his epic novels, this is the account of a peasant woman and her three children caught between the rival forces of French aristocrats and Republican troups moving quickly to snuff out insurrection in the counterrevolutionary Vende uprising.

93 is Victor Hugo's masterpiece. His writing is beautiful and the work opens an extaordinary window into the french revolution at its most brilliant and chaotic.

If you think Les Miserables is too long for you, give Ninety-Three a try. It reads quickly, if you skip the bit of history in the middle, and the themes present are equally as powerful as those found in Les Miserables.
