Nino Rota: Music for Film

( 2 )

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Music for Film contains selections from seven Rota scores -- The Godfather, The Godfather, Pt. 2, 8 1/2, The Orchestral Rehearsal, La Dolce Vita, Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard -- as performed by Riccardo Muti and the Filarmonica della Scala. Muti has researched Rota's scores and notes, finding the composer's original ideas for the scores and basing his interpretations on those. The results are uniformly stunning, bringing the scores to vivid life and revealing new subtlties within the music itself. It's essential for any fan of Rota, Muti or film music.

    Memorable Rota

This collection contains an excellent cross-section of Nino Rota's unique film career, not just "Godfather; Il Gattopardo," as the title on this website suggests. Aside from the memorable and unique beauty of his music, Nino Rota knew how to write music for a smaller orchestra. His individual voice for portraying emotion and humor though music is something captured extremely well in this set of re-recorded pieces, and the booklet notes say that the scores were reconstructed from Rota's typically scattered notes. I recommend this recording for anyone who loves not just film music, but instrumental music as well.

    Extremely Essential

Extremely essential for those looking for absolute orchestral technique in producing a better sound definition. Muti leads the Filarmonica to surpass the music and read the real Godfather. Rota would have been so impressed to know his music was performed in such a beauty. Bravo Muti and Filarmonica.
