Biography

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. Chapter One

Nobody told me about the poison oak.

Oh, they told me about the palm trees. Yeah, they told me plenty about the palm trees, all right. But nobody ever said a word about this poison oak business.

"The thing is, Susannah--"

Father Dominic was talking to me. I was trying to pay attention, but let me tell you something: poison oak itches.

"As mediators--which is what we are, you and I, Susannah--we have a responsibility. We have a responsibility to give aid and solace to those unfortunate souls who are suffering in the void between the living and the dead."

I mean, yeah, the palm trees are nice and everything. It had been cool to step off the plane and see those palm trees everywhere, especially since I'd heard how cold it can get at night in northern California.

But what is the deal with this poison oak? How come nobody ever warned me about that?

"You see, as mediators, Susannah, it is our duty to help lost souls get to where they are supposed to be going. We are their guides, as it were. Their spiritual liaisons between this world and the next." Father Dominic fingered an unopened pack of cigarettes that was sitting on his desk, and regarded me with those big old baby blues of his. "But when one's spiritual liaison takes one's head and slams it into a locker door . . . well, you can see how that kind ofbehavior might not build the sort of trust we'd like to establish with our troubled brothers and sisters."

I looked up from the rash on my hands. Rash. That wasn't even the word for it. It was like a fungus. Worse than a fungus, even. It was a growth. An insidious growth that, given time, would consume every inch of my once smooth, unblemished skin, covering it with red, scaly bumps. That oozed, by the way.

"Yeah," I said, "but if our troubled brothers and sisters are giving us a hard time, I don't see why it's such a crime if I just haul off and slug them in the--"

"But don't you see, Susannah?" Father Dominic clenched the pack of cigarettes. I'd only known him a couple of weeks, but whenever he started fondling his cigarettes--which he never, by the way, actually smoked--it meant he was upset about something.

That something, at this particular moment, appeared to be me.

"That is why," he explained, "you're called a mediator. You are supposed to be helping to bring these troubled souls to spiritual fulfillment--"

"Look, Father Dom," I said. I tucked my oozing hands out of sight. "I don't know what kind of ghosts you've been dealing with lately, but the ones I've been running into are about as likely to find spiritual fulfillment as I'm going to find a decent New York City-style slice of pizza in this town. It ain't gonna happen. These folks are going to hell or they're going to heaven or they're going on to their next life as a caterpillar in Kathmandu, but any way you slice it, sometimes they're gonna need a little kick in the butt to get them there. . . ."

"No, no, no." Father Dominic leaned forward. He couldn't lean forward too much because a week or so before, one of those troubled souls of his had decided to forgo spiritual enlightenment and tried to snap his leg off instead. She also broke a couple of his ribs, gave him a pretty nifty concussion, tore up the school real good, and, let's see, what else?

Oh, yeah. She tried to kill me.

Father Dominic was back at school, but he was wearing a cast that went all the way down to his toes, and disappeared up his long black robe, who knew how far? Personally, I didn't like to think about it.

He was getting pretty handy with those crutches, though. He could chase the late kids up and down the halls if he had to. But since he was the principal, and it was up to the novices to hand out late slips, he didn't have to. Besides, Father Dom was pretty cool, and wouldn't do something like that even if he could.

Though he takes the whole ghost thing a little too seriously, if you ask me.

"Susannah," he said, tiredly. "You and I, for better or for worse, were born with an incredible gift--an ability to see and speak to the dead."

"There you go again," I said, rolling my eyes, "with that gift stuff. Frankly, Father, I don't see it that way."

How could I? Since the age of two--two years old--I've been pestered with, pounded on, plagued by restless spirits. For fourteen years, I've put up with their abuse, helping them when I could, punching them when I could not, always fearful of somebody finding out my secret and revealing me to be the biological freak I've always known I am, but have tried so desperately to hide from my sweet, long-suffering mother.

And then Mom remarried and moved me out to California--in the middle of my sophomore year, thanks very much--where, wonder of wonders, I'd actually met someone cursed with the same horrible affliction: Father Dominic.

Only Father Dominic refuses to view our "gift" in the same light as me. To him, it's a marvelous opportunity to help others in need.

Yeah, okay. That's fine for him. He's a priest. He's not a sixteen-year-old girl who, hello, would like to have a social life.

If you ask me, a "gift" would have some plus side to it. Like superhuman strength or the ability to read minds, or something. But I don't have any of that cool stuff. I'm just an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl--well, okay, with above ordinary looks, if I do say so myself--who happens to be able to converse with the dead.

Big deal.

"Susannah," he said now, very seriously. "We are mediators. We aren't . . . well, terminators. Our duty is to intervene on the spirits' behalf, and lead them to their ultimate destination. We do that by gentle guidance and counseling, not by punching them in the face or by performing Brazilian voodoo exorcisms."

    The Ninth Key

    The Mediator series is about a 16 year old girl who can talk to ghosts. This book is mostly about Suze's personal life tying with the ghostly world. This book is usually for 12-16 year olds. I think that Meg Cabot is trying to make a story that can't actually be real, but still include the everyday life of normal, awkward teenagers. The Ninth Key was the best book in the whole series, because it was gripping, fun, and full of teenage drama.
    Meg Cabot is an author who likes to write about teenage girls with abnormal powers that carry large burdens. This book is about 16 year old Suze who, has just moved to California with her stepfather and his sons, and she can talk to ghosts. It is the second book in the series, and in this book, she faces the ghost of a woman, se thinks, to be murdered by the vampire father of her first date, Tad Beaumont. There is all of this plus the other ghost who is living in her room, Jesse.
    The Ninth Key is quite a page-turner, the good thing about this one is that she gets asked out on her first date, the father of this date is a supposed vampire, and she can talk to the people who this "vampire" has killed. It is probably not the most convenient situation for real life, but it is a really good read, and it reaches its goals, and probably even exceeds them. Some of the other books in this series are not as action-packed as this one because this one was not only about ghosts, but also about dangerous humans.
    This book was the best book in the series so far. It was full of action, drama, it was funny, and it still contained the aspects of the normal teenage life. This was my favorite book in the whole series so far, and I recommend it to anyone who likes funny, action-packed, ghostly stories.

    A really good series

    A very engaging series. As the series progresses the story line gets a lot better and more developed. BY the end you fall madly in love with Jesse. The whole series may not be reread-able, but the last book is.

    Great book

    Awesome read. I could not put the book down for a second. Perfect plot,never ending suspence, romance, and ghost. Have you ever heard of a book better than this one? Loved every page.

    Great Quick Read!!!!

    it is a really good book. ya ya you hear that alot dont you? well this isn't one of THE BEST BOOKS you have ever read, but it is a good one. you oviasley will remember it. you might gasp at some parts, you might even scream at the book like i did (and i dont do that very often ether). you might even want to read ahead and because of that you would get edgy.. so if i were you i'd read that book wenever i could. id read the first book to cause you might not get it if you skip one book (been there done that). so read 'da book!!!!! and if you dont want to buyy it go to the library.....

    After moving from her New York home to Carmel, California, Suze's life is finally looking up!

    Her days are filled by parties and good hair days - what every teenage girl can relate to wanting. The only thing that Suze wants to change about herself is the fact that she can see ghosts who want to pass messages along to friends or family. She is a mediator.

    Even though everything seems to be going her way, Suze has a ghost that seems to be connected to Tad Beaumont, the hottest guy in town, who also happens to have asked her out. Suze just can't understand what Tad and this ghost have to do with each other.

    And then she meets Tad's father.

    NINTH KEY is the second book in THE MEDIATOR series, following SHADOWLAND, and is a fun addition to your bookshelf. There is a good mix of ghosts, romance, and creepy characters! Another fun Meg Cabot book!

    The Second book in the Mediator series

    Suze has started getting used to being a Mediator and in a new town and is still trying to get used to living with her new family. Suze is then visited by two very different ghosts with a message to two very and i mean very different people. I was a little annoyed how Suze kept complaining for more than one page of how she wished she was normal, no guy would ask her out, and jessie...blah blah. Anyway, I like how the author wrote the book as if it were a diary of Suze's and you can almost relate to the character. For some reason when reading this Jessie reminded me a little bit of the actor trent ford.

    'THE BEST BOOKS EVER'

    The main caracter is Suze but her real name is Susannah.She is an adventurous 16-year-old girl with a gift to talk to the dead. There is Jesse,he is a ghost that was killed in the early 1850s.He is a spanish guy that always seams to be there when Suze needs help.Father Dom is a priest that is a mediator too.He and Suze try to get the job done with two different stiyles

    Best books ever written seriously

    I read the first of this series and I couldn't put it down, let alone any other books from this series. It has everything from romance to fighting. This is meg cabot's best series ever! Trust me.

    Shadows From the Other Side

    Susannah was peacefully sleeping in her bed until she was awaken by a dreadful screaming by a ghost who wanted Suze to deliver a message for her to ¿Red¿ and then the ghost left. Suze was confused and not very happy now because she was not only awakened by a ghost but she had know clue Red was because the woman did not give her any detailed information. The next day she went to school and asked her friend Cee Cee who Red was Cee and Cee said o,Red Beaumont. What do you want him for? Suze replied by saying Red Beaumont? Suze replied by saying that must be Tad¿s dad, then mumbled to herself and said that must be why she came to me, because she felt a connection between Tad and I when he asked me to dance! When Suze got to Red¿s house she told him he was the hardest person to get a hold of. After telling Red what he needed to know he went psycho on her so she tried to escape but everything was either locked or nailed shut. Then luckily a guy named Marcus came to her rescue. In order to find out what really happened you¿ll have to read the book but I must tell you everything gets switched around!

    This is a must read

    This book was one of the best i never read! Meg Cabot is a brilliant writer, my favorite nontheless. The book hypnatises you to keep reading, it's a great book with an unexpected twist! Highly Reccomended:)

    Not only a book, but a series that keeps you begging for more...

    Suzy is a character that we can all relate to in some way or another... we may not have the same 'girft' that she was given but we have all been in her place... moving across the country, starting a new school, having three new step brothers, liking the most popular guy in school, but how many of us have actually fell for a guy that was not only smooth and daring, but was a ghost? Besides Suzy getting used to her new home and school, she has to try and sort out her feelings that she has for the living and the non living... which guy will Suzy go for? And will that guy feel the same way about her? To find out, you not only have to read 'Ninth Key' but the other 5 books that come along in the Meditator series... They will keep you begging for more!

    I love Meg Cabot books, especially The Mediator Series! The book creates suspense for the readers, and is a wonderful if you are a young teen who loves mystery.
