Overview

Considering the long and tortuous legal wrangling behind this retrospective collection from grunge kings Nirvana, its very existence is something of a miracle. But even more extraordinary is the unblemished way in which the assembled tunes have aged, a testament to the late Kurt Cobain's soulful songwriting and the band's earnest, unaffected performances, traits that set them apart from the legions of grunge-styled bands following in their wake. That's probably most clear in the writhing, pounding grooves of the much-discussed "You Know You're Right" -- an "important" song because it's the last complete tune to be recorded by Nirvana, but a song that reaches undeniable greatness because of the undiluted passion Cobain poured into it. Beyond that stellar cut -- the disc's sole unreleased item -- Nirvana collects all the touchstones one would expect ("Smells like Teen Spirit," "Lithium," "Come as You Are") as well as nods to both the band's indie material and its later, more delicate side. The Sub Pop years are represented by the desperate-sounding "Sliver" and "About a Girl," while the fragility of Cobain's later compositions is showcased on "Heart Shaped Box" and "Pennyroyal Tea" (presented here in a version remixed by Scott Litt). Rounding out the set are live renditions of "All Apologies" and David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." Beyond the essential "You Know You're Right," longtime fans won't find many surprises here, but as a representation of what Nirvana was all about, Nirvana is impossible to fault.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The long-awaited single-disc anthology of Nirvana's work, simply titled Nirvana, has all the hits and many of the radio favorites, plus the very good previously unreleased final recording, "You Know You're Right."
Rolling Stone - Ben Ratliff
A surprising continuity rolls through all the familiar songs on the set.
Spin Magazine - Chuck Klosterman
It's a retrospective that resurrects all the questions Cobain left unanswered when he left us. (10)
Entertainment Weekly - David Browne
By the end, you'll be happy to have relived the band's glories -- and bummed all over again. (A)

I really am dissapointed that Courtney wouldn't release his new song earlier! She needs to get off her high horse and let Nirvana be.Yeah I'm excited to read his journals but she shouldn't have put Kurts PERSONAL thaughts ect. to the public. I really hope that Frances doesn't end up like her mother. Otherwise I really am happy that this CD finally came out although I am dissapointed in such a non-creative title for it. I'd also like to know when the box set is going to be released, since there is much controversy. (i can't spell at all)

I like to listen to many different types of music, i usually stayed away from "grudge" (i dont' like the catagorize music) but when i heard bits of this cd i bought heart-shaped box on itunes...nirvania is awesome.

This is a first Nirvana cd I bought and my favorite! If I could only own one cd,this would have to be it. Because it takes some of the best songs from each cd.

I still don't believe it, another awesome cd from one wicked band. I have to say I get a bit freaked out when I see the music video for You Know Your Right but that has nothing to do with this great band's new album. If you don't own this cd you're not a true fan of the greatest band ever. Nirvava rocks!!

The tracks on the cd are as good a quality as ever but will never beat Nevermind. I only bought Greatest Hits for Kurt's raw passion in You Know You're Right. Box set would've been better. we love you kurt.

big fan of anything written by the greastest song writter of all time. may u rest in peace kurt. ur loss saddens us all. but their is so many better songs than the songs on this album. im sure u all think u nirvane fans but nirvana's greatest hits cd is bleach... then in utero. this cd comes in third maybe fourth. try this for a real greatest hits cd... blew, about a girl, school love buzz, negitive creep, MR. MOUSTACHE (my personal favourite), downer, serve the servents, heart shapped box, rape me, frances revenge..., dumb, milk it, radio friendly unit shiffter, tourette's, dive sliver, stain, been a son, polly (new wave), beeswax, hairyspray queen, and aneurysm. although many of these songs are not nirvana's popularest, this is real kurt at his best. anger and rage along with the greatest sounds. this cd should be titled nirvana raw.

This is the greatest band that there ever was! This album is a great collection of their best- only a few "greats" were excluded. HeartShaped Box is my favorite..followed closely by Rape Me. Buy this and all of their other albums!!!!

It's great to see that Nirvana is still around! The album is a must-buy. However, I wished there would be more underground songs of Nirvana, like "verse chorus, verse", "D7", etc,. It would be great to have a band like Nirvana again: a band that creates more than music, a passion for life through their simplicity of power chords, leaving the listener to experience a spiritual climax. But there can only be one Nirvana.

Aside of the Beatles, and a very few other, older bands, NIRVANA is the greatest one to come in a long time. Compared to today's music, they are Gods.

The album does not quite fit all together i mean they could have just mad a single cd with just the new song but i guess they thought they would make more money if they put onl songs in it to i just think it would have been better to have just that song or more new songs beacuse it is kinda a waste to buy an album for one song. See i have every Nirvana cd and i did not feel like listening to the other songs cuz i already have them i just think they could have done better. But nirvana still ROCKS!

Nirvana is possibly the best band in history, and this collection of songs is a great lineup worthy of the title "best hits" however, courtney love has no right to mooch of the success of the husband she murdered. Kurt is spinning in his grave knowing that this demon temptress is profiting once again from his success, and the success of the others in his band. because of this, i give the album 3 stars because of the incredible talent and quality displayed in the album, and the evil tyranny which helped release it.

I never really listened to grundge or rock in general but i bought this cd and fell in love with the band. this is the best greatest hits album i ever heard. R.I.P. KURT COBAIN

I bought this c.d. right away, and I really love it! I loved the first track "You know your right" and have listened to it many times. As the biggest Kurt Cobain fan ever I was ecstatic about this c.d and track number 1 which I had never heard!!!!!!!!!!!!COBAIN LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nirvana will never die. Another great CD

Nirvana: With this CD, I just reached. The songs on this are absolutely torturous to the soul as Cobain wanted them to be. I guess that's a tribute unto itself. "You Know You're Right" is one of the most wrenching songs, even if I didn't who wrote it or sung it. A great compiliation and finally Courtney Love let's us have a memory of Kurt in some way.

"You Know You're Right" (the first track on the album) is the coolest. It has to be Nirvana's most emotional and depressing song ever. "Heart Shaped Box" is an awsome song and will have screaming, headbanging, and jumping up and down in no time.
Guest More than 1 year ago
Nirvana is the best album I've ever bought, the only flaw is that "You Know You're Right" needs to be at the END of the album, but that is a minor problem, you should buy it

This album is great, except it is missing a lot of other great songs such as, sentless apprentice, dive and anuerysm,,polly, drain you, this isn't a total collection i would pay money for, i would wait for a better try at a nirvana greatest hits record, it should at least have some rarities and some live and loud stuff that would make it cool, if your not a nirvan addict and just like a few songs you heard on the radio, buy it, but if you really really like nirvana wait for a box set, that would come with more goodies.Nirvana is the puriest truest form of rock band since zeppelin hendrix, even, the beatles, in fact i like nirvana better than the beatles, the songs have heart and soul, unlike other bands who just focus on solos and chart topping records.one of the few bands that will really go down in music history.

Nirvana is one of the coolest bands ever!!!! People who haven't heard any of their songs, you HAVE TO listen to them!!! Personally, I suggest you listen to one of the following: 1. Sliver 2. Smells Like Teen Spirit 3. Come As You Are 4. The Man Who Sold the World PLEASE LISTEN TO ANY OF THESE SONGS!!!

I was only 2 when Kurt commited sucide but i already was a huge fan, my favorite song was Sliver, and i still am. Every CD is awesome and so is this one but the best song on it has to be You Know Your Right. When I listen to it the passion he puts into it breaks your heart because you know this is the last "new" song you'll ever hear but makes you want more and mis him more. If you truly love Nirvana you would have this CD. WE MISS YOU KURT!!!

This album is almost the perfect greatest hits collection. "You Know You're Right" actually gives you chills the first time you hear it, and it is still one of my favorite songs. Songs they shoud've included: "Pennyroyal Tea" unplugged, "All Apologies" Electric Version, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", and "Anyerism".
Guest More than 1 year ago
Nirvanas the only band that can take random words and make them into a great song like "sliver"
Guest More than 1 year ago
This was an excellent CD. Although I do wish there were more songs from "Bleach" on it, it still is a great album. I highly recommend this album for any Nirvana fan, especially if you're a fan of their more mainstream stuff.

nirvana is the absolut greatest band ever. this cd is only a compilation of some of thier great songs including the unrealesed "you know your right". this cd is great. awesome cd. awesome band NIRVANA

Well, I love Nirvana and was excited to hear that they had a greatest hits album coming out(my cds were stolen recently and i didnt have cash to rebuy them all, so this made it easier). All the songs are great except Been a Son and Sliver. Why they would add these two songs in favor of an actual hit, Polly, is unclear to me. Been a Son and Sliver were not hits, they were mediocre b-sides, and should not have been included on this ablum. They screwed up something that could have been, and should have been, wonderful. Dave, Krist, and Courtney owe it to the fans of this amazing band to put out a good, comprehensive, hits compilation. They failed to meet expectations
