Chapter One

GENESIS

THE BEGINNING

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, "Let there be light" and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, "Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. "God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. 10 From birth I was cast on you; From my mother's womb you have been my God.

11 Do not be far from me, For trouble is near and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. 13 Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. 15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the root of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my Feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among them and cast lots For my garment.

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. 20 Deliver me From the sword, my precious life From the power of the dogs. 21 Rescue me From the mouth of the lions; save me From the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. 23 You who tear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his Face From him but has listened to his cry For help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who tear you' I will fulfill my vows. 26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him—may your hearts live Forever!

27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the Families of the nations will bow down before him, 28 For dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will Least and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—those who cannot keep themselves alive. 30 Posterity will serve him; Future generations will be told about the Lord. 31 They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!

PSALM 23

A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

PSALM 24

Of David. A psalm.

1 The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2 for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.

5 They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him who seek your face, God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty— he is the King of glory.

PSALM 25

Of David.

1 In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.

2 I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.

4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. 6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. 7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.

8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. 9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. 11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose. 13 They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land. 14 The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. 15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. 17 Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. 18 Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. 19 See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me!

20 Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. 21 May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountain side and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

THE BEATITUDES He said:

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, per se cute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you be cause of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, be cause great is your re ward in heaven, for in the same way they per se cut ed the prophets who were be fore you.

SALT AND LIGHT

13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for any thing, except to be thrown out and tram pled underfoot.

14 "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can not be hid den. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put under a bowl. In stead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to every one in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine be fore others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until every thing is accomplished. 19 There fore any one who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but who ever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that un less your righteous ness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

MURDER

21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'You shall not murder, and any one who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that any one who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, any one who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' is answer able to the court. And any one who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 "There fore, if you are offering your gift at the al tar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the al tar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

I hav seen this Bible, and looked at it several times in the book store, and even though I already have a lot of different Bibles, I really want to get this one because of all the colorful charts and highlights on stories and topics. I think it makes getting into the Bible easy because the stories practically jump out and capture your interest!

    Good for e-reading

Ok for comfortable e-reading. Has a linkable table of contents. But not fast for quick lookups if you're at church or in a group.
