Overview

Are you in a desert experience? Let your thirsty soul be restored and refreshed through the daily devotions in the NIV Streams in the Desert Bible.

At some point in our lives, we encounter the trials and deep mysteries of the Christian faith. And when we do become like a thirsty traveler, what we most desire is for hope, comfort, and encouragement to burst forth like a sparkling, clear river.

The hopeful daily readings in this Bible promise to revive and refresh you—one of today’s generation of faithful sojourners—by providing daily devotions in modern, easy-to-understand language that beautifully captures the timeless essence of the original. These devotionals are presented alongside Scripture using the popular New International Version of the Bible.

While the devotions in this Bible were originally written by L. B. Cowman—a pioneer missionary in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917—this devotional Bible has been edited by James Reimann. It maintains the beauty of the original Cowman writings while making the devotionals more accessible for the readers of today.

Features:

• Complete text of the clear, accessible NIV Bible

• 365 daily readings of strength and encouragement from L. B. Cowman

• Foreword by Jim Reimann

• Ribbon Marker

Meet the Author

L. B. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917, during which time they helped found the Oriental Missionary Society. When Mr. Cowman's poor health forced the couple to return to the United States, Mrs. Cowman turned her attention to caring for her husband until his death six years later. Out of Mrs. Cowman's experiences and heartbreak came her first book, Streams in the Desert, followed by its companion Springs in the Valley. During the next twenty-five years, Mrs. Cowman inspired several nationwide Scripture distribution campaigns and wrote seven more books. Finally, on Easter Sunday in 1960, at the age of ninety, Mrs. Cowman met face-to-face the God she had served so faithfully for nearly a century.

Jim Reimann has more than five million books in print in twelve languages, including the updated editions of Streams in the Desert and My Utmost for His Highest. He was a former retail executive and past chairman of the Christian Booksellers Association. As an ordained minister, Bible teacher, author, and expert on Israel, he hosted teaching tours of Israel and other Bible lands, which he offered through his website. www.Jim Reimann.com

Streams in the Desert, a compilation of devotionals by L.B.E. Co

Streams in the Desert, a compilation of devotionals by L.B.E. Cowman remains a timeless classic. And for those who love the uplifting reflections but have a hard time with the heavy “olde Englishe” style, there is now a modernized version edited by Jim Reimann. But no devotional can replace God’s Word, and since the NIV is the most popular English Bible translation, the NIV Streams in the Desert Bible is brilliant.

The NIV Streams in the Desert Bible combines the NIV Bible translation and the 365 devotionals from the contemporary version of Streams in the Desert. That’s nifty.

As well as the convenient combo—and in spite of the modern language—the look of this Bible is charming. Cloaked with an antique looking faded green cover with a glossy photo of rushing waters, the inside layout of this hard-backed Bible is easy to read and clearly distinguishes Bible text from devos. It is also the perfect size to hold and carry.

The devotional reading sections are labeled under date and woven within the pages of the Bible next to the relevant passages and each section ends with a denotation giving the page number of the next day’s reading. This works great if you read the devotionals daily and in chronological order, but—and here’s where this book falls short—if you just want to find today’s devotional and have not bookmarked the previous day’s, then you’ll find yourself turning a lot of pages to find it. There is however a subject index. Still, an index aligning devo dates to page numbers would have added a lot.

This Bible makes a great gift or an investment for your own spiritual growth. Find it in all major bookstores.

This story will also appear in Assist News Service.

I¿ve been enamored with the devotional Streams In The Desert eve

I’ve been enamored with the devotional Streams In The Desert ever since I came to saving faith.  So when my
wife received a copy of the NIV Streams In The Desert Devotional Bible – I snagged it.  With permission, of
    course.

Zondervan does the usual great job with the NIV text, including textual aids and some cross references at the
bottom of the page.  However, this is a devotional Bible, not a true study Bible, so don’t look for a lot of that
    material.

It’s strength lies in the devotions that are tied to various portions of scripture; 365 of them, to be exact; one for
each day of the year.  Drawn from Streams In The Desert, as well as from other authors, the devotions help the
reader to “put shoe leather” to the passage under consideration.  I was preparing the evening message when
this arrived, and I found material that fit perfectly with my message in the very first devotional.  Very cool!

The review copy I received was the hardback copy, with a dust jacket.  The dust jacket was designed to
suggest that this was a book that had been on the shelves for many, many years.  As such . . . some might not
find it so appealing.  Also, one of the “features” mentioned on the back cover was a ribbon marker.  The copy I
received did not have that ribbon marker.

But I’m not throwing the book back, by any stretch of the imagination.  As mentioned, I’ve already “put this book
to good use,” as it was intended.

4 stars for a classic devotional Bible
