Chapter One

The Beginning

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, "Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground apall who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.

30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. 31 They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with off; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Matthew 4:10

10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only."

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtah, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."

4:17 Words for Jewish Readers

Matthew wrote for a primarily Jewish audience. Starting with his opening chapter, he affirms that Jesus is the Messiah, backing up that claim by constant reference to the Old Testament. Often Matthew leaves Jewish phrases and customs unexplained, assuming that his readers are familiar with them. And, where other Gospel writers say "kingdom of God," he uses the phrase "kingdom of heaven" out of respect for Jews, who never wrote out the word God.

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Heals the Sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

5Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

5:17 Jesus and Moses' Law

In this statement, Jesus clarifies his relationship to the Law of Moses. The next paragraph gets more specific, contrasting Jesus' teaching with many common interpretations of that law. "You have heard that it was said ...," he begins, and then concludes, "But I tell you ..." Jesus revealed the true intent of the Old Testament law, rather than its legalistic interpretations.

The Best Student Bible in Print!

If you're new to the Bible like I am, or even if you've read the Bible you entire life, I recommend you buy this Bible and follow its three reading tracks in order. They'll reveal things in the Bible you never knew before, and will greatly enhance your enjoyment of G-d's word. I started out trying to read a normal Bible with no helps or anything, and I got discouraged really quickly. I bought this Bible 4 days ago, and haven't been able to put it down since.

    Not Nook Friendly

This version does flow very well for a tablet based study bible. I was looking for something that would be easy to follow and navigate through. Sure, the eBook contains bible context. It is just not set up for eBook useage.

    more from this reviewer

    Great Bible!

I enjoy most everything about this Bible. It's sturdy, attractive and the pages are thick. It provides three guided reading plans depending on your reading style. The font is large and there are many snippets of information throughout that offer great insight. My only qualm is that some of their examples seem either a little too obvious to bother pointing out or too much of a stretch to compare. Other than that I love it.

    I love it

I'm 14 and grew up in a Christain household. When I was around 12, I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and I completely neglected God. After a couple of months I went to youth group and talked to a man at my church about it, because I was starting to have a harder time with everything that I've had before. He gave me a Bible because mine had gotten pretty jacked up. I have it right beside me now. I'm back to being a good girl! Please pray for me though, I'm not exactly completely through it yet.

    I have a few questions.

I have the HBSC Bible, and it is so hard to use, can you pick the book of the Bible, and which chapter? Is it in columns? I would like the Bible on my Nook? to be just like the normal, standard Bible, so that I can take my Nook with me places instead of lugging around my heavy Bible...:)

    Great work, recommend to read

I highly recommend this read, it works well and the editor has great notes in it. With being an e-book flipping around can be difficult at times, but I just remembered/wrote down page numbers and jumped automatically to where I was.

    REALLY?!

This is God's Word. The holy book. And you were using it for that kind of a coversation? Anyway... I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS HIGHLY AS IT IS POSSIBLE TO. More people need to read the bible. Some people think its just a book, but it can really change your life. My bible (and God) has helped me through what was likely the worst moment of my life. THANK YOU GOD for your love and wisdom. :)
