Chapter 1

Succeeding on the NJ ASK6 Language Arts Literacy Test

ABOUT THIS BOOK AND TESTWARE ®

This book, along with REA’s exclusive TestWare® software, provides excellent preparation for the New Jersey ASK6 Language Arts Literacy Assessment. Inside you will find lessons, drills, strategies, and practice tests—all with a single-minded focus: success on the NJ ASK6, an acronym that stands for Assessment of Skills and Knowledge.

We have made every effort to make the book easy to read and navigate. The practice tests are included in two formats: in this book and software package.

There are two lesson sections: Chapter 2 teaches the reading skills that the test will assess. This chapter starts off with a basic summary of the skills that will be reviewed and a reminder of the importance of following directions. This is followed by helpful hints on how to answer questions regarding vocabulary, main ideas, the organization of the reading passage, and the interpretation of the author’s meaning. After these skills are introduced, narrative and informational texts are provided for you to practice answering sample questions.

Chapter 3 focuses on improving your ability to use the writing process to complete persuasive and speculative prompts. The section focuses on prewriting, preparing a written response, and proofreading that response. The lessons will help improve and expand your existing knowledge of these areas.

Finally, this book concludes with two full-length practice tests to give you a realistic test experience of the NJ ASK6 test before the actual test. Following each test, answers and complete explanations are provided. We recommend that you begin your preparation by first taking the practice exams on your computer. The software provides timed conditions and instantaneous, accurate scoring that makes it easier to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK AND TESTWARE ®

FOR STUDENTS: The best way to prepare for a test is to practice, and you’ll find that we’ve included drills with answers throughout the book, and that our two practice tests include detailed answers. You’ll find that our practice tests are very much like the actual ASK6 you’ll encounter on test day.

In addition, prepare for the test by reading over the test information and study tips. Take practice test 1 on CD-ROM to determine your strengths and weaknesses, and then study the course review material, focusing on your specifi c problem areas. The course review includes the information you need to know when taking the test. Make sure to follow up by taking practice test 2 on CD-ROM so you’re thoroughly familiar with the format and feel of the NJ ASK 6 Language Arts Literature Assessment.

FOR PARENTS: New Jersey has created grade-appropriate standards for English language arts and has listed them in clusters, which are explained below. Students need to meet these standards as measured by the ASK6. Our book will help your child review for the ASK6 and prepare for the Language Arts Literacy exam. It includes review sections, drills, and two practice tests complete with explanations to help your child focus on the areas he or she needs to work on to master the test.

FOR TEACHERS: No doubt, you are already familiar with the ASK6 and its format. Begin working through each of the lessons in succession. When students have completed the subject review, they should move on to the practice tests. Answers and complete answer explanations follow each of the practice tests.

WHY STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE NJ ASK6

In 1996 the New Jersey State Board of Education adopted Core Curriculum Content Standards that defi ne New Jersey’s expectations for student learning. The board updated the Language Arts Literacy standards in 2004. To determine how well a student is advancing and whether the student is on course to perform well in high school, sixth grade students are required to take the ASK6.

The ASK is one of the key tools used to identify students who need additionalinstruction to master the knowledge and skills detailed in the Core Curriculum, the standards that guide education in New Jersey.

WHAT’S ON THE NJ ASK6
By the time a student enters the sixth grade, he or she will be experienced at taking standardized tests. Starting from the third grade, the NJ ASK is given annually until a student enters high school. The test has been derived from the same set of expectations that are given to teachers from which to create their lesson plans. The sixth-grade version of the test was revised for the 2007/2008 school year.

Currently, the test contains two days of language arts assessment including reading passages and writing prompts. The test is usually given in May and all students are required to take it. The reading portion contains two narrative passages with related questions. Questions will include multiple-choice questions ranging from vocabulary skills to comprehension-based topics. For each reading passage,
students are also required to complete an open-ended response. Students will be given 40 minutes to work on the passages. The informational, everyday reading passage will make up 30 minutes of the test.

For the writing portion, students will complete persuasive and speculative prompts. Persuasive prompts will be answered in 45 minutes while the speculative prompts will be answered in 25 minutes.
