Now in its Fourth Edition, NMS Psychiatry contains numerous new features. Among these revisions are additional contributors, a chapter on legal issues, and a compendium of drugs. Many scientifically based practice guidelines were used in the preparation of this edition. The 500 Step 2 USMLE-style questions offered at the end of each chapter and in a comprehensive exam at the end of the book contain detailed explanations. Chapter topics include the clinical examination, personality disorders, and cognitive and mental disorders due to general medical conditions, substance-related disorders, somatoform and associated disorders, sexual and gender issues, child psychiatry, and more.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Medical students choose books in this series for their comprehensive coverage and outline format. Bold headers make reading and searching for particular content easy. Each chapter contains the subject outline, study questions, answers, and explanations. At the end of the book is a comprehensive exam with answers and explanations following. The many tables of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and other information help summarize important material in visual form.
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nancy Schell, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This 2001 edition of the NMS (National Medical Series) review for USMLE preparation in psychiatry contains both text and board-type questions with annotated answers.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students to learn a great deal of information in a short amount of time and review specific topics quickly and easily. This is a valuable goal and the authors' objectives are met.
Audience: Intended for medical students, this book is useful to anyone in the field.
Features: Outlined are the basic psychiatric disorders, those described in the DSM IV and others, as well as diagnosis, possible etiologies, epidemiology, and treatment. Emphasis is placed on the incorporation of the latest research. Throughout, discussion of the various perspectives in psychiatry is well balanced and the book integrates psychotherapeutic, biologic, and sociologic aspects. This edition also includes a chapter on legal issues and a compendium of drugs. At the end of each chapter are USMLE-like questions that are useful in differentiating key points. At the end of the book is a general exam.
Assessment: This well-organized, easy to access, and comprehensive book is very helpful not only for review, but also for learning. It is excellent and I highly recommend it for study and review.
