If Dido's sublime blend of lush, layered pop and electronica seems more like a classic than a debut, it's probably because she's been immersed in music since the age of six. Both her formal classical training and the influence of big brother Rollo (of trip-hop ensemble Faithless) shine through these songs of introspection and heartbreak.

Overview

If Dido's sublime blend of lush, layered pop and electronica seems more like a classic than a debut, it's probably because she's been immersed in music since the age of six. Both her formal classical training and the influence of big brother Rollo (of trip-hop ensemble Faithless) shine through these songs of introspection and heartbreak. Culled from personal experience, her stint as a literary agent, and simply walking down the street with her eyes -- and ears -- open, the narratives that anchor these floaty arrangements are at once personal and universal. The hollow pain of "My Lover's Gone" comes not only from the lyrics but from Dido's rich vocals and the spare melody they rest on. NO ANGEL is both a stunning solo entrée, and one of the most impressive examples of the new pop-electronica hybrid to date.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jeff Burger
The title notwithstanding, this debut from the former Faithless singer is pretty angelic-sounding stuff. You're bound to think of Sinéad O'Connor, but the comparison is as misleading as it is inevitable. Granted, Dido's ethereal vocals here frequently recall O'Connor; but Dido's music -- while inventively augmented with electronics -- is generally less adventurous. Ditto No Angel's lyrics, which focus almost exclusively on love, lust, and relationships. That said, the fact remains that this is an auspicious and highly listenable album -- atmospheric, seductive, and beautifully produced and sequenced. [The late 2001 re-release features several bonus tracks and a bonus CD with audio and video tracks, including "Take My Hand," "Christmas Day," and remixes of "Here with Me," "Thank You," "Hunter," and "Take My Hand."]

A lovely album, moving, with perfect heartbreaking turns of melody. My favorite on the disc is 'Hunter,' a sweet subtle gem about new beginnings and moving on.

This CD is a must have for a well rounded collection. It may include the theme song for Roswell,a supposedly good show, but the music is even better that the show! So for all of you that aren't Roswell fans, this is still a great CD. I am not a fan of the WB but I love this CD. You won't regret buying it!

My favorite song on the album is Here with me, because I am a big, BIG, Rosewll fan. I had to find out where that song came from! Now that i have the CD, I love all her songs.

This debut album of a former Faithless member is truly astounding. Dido¿s low airy voice sets a relaxing mood, and blends with the style of the music perfectly. The poignant lyrics are very fitting as well, bringing together the combination of acoustic pop and techno (electronica). What I think I like best is that it is different than anything else. Dido is definitely more than another Britany Spears knockoff. I also like the way the way I can listen to it in any setting. On the bus, at work, studying in my room or whenever, it always sets a tranquil atmosphere, without putting me to sleep. And, I never get tired of hearing it. I would give this a high rating on any scale. I recommend it to anyone who likes the theme song of Roswell, Charmed, or Sarah McLachlan, and any music style similar to that. It is definitely worth the eighteen dollars, so go and buy it right now!

Dido's album is superb. Every song is fabulous. Not only are her perfect voice and meaningful lyrics great, so is the music. She's quite different from the other solo females that come to mind.

This is simply the best cd that I've purchased in a very long time. Dido's voice is mesmerizing and haunting. I'd recommend this cd to anyone. If you like Sarah McLachlan, you'll love Dido!

I watch Roswell and when i first heard the song ''here with me'' it touched me on a deep level i hope others will choose to buy the cd and enjoy it as i do. Thanks for reading this.

I first heard Dido on the WB's Roswell, on the opening song, Here With Me. At the time, I had no idea there was a CD out, let alone who the artist was. But later, I looked on the Internet and saw the CD, so I listened to a few songs. As soon as I can get there, I am going to the mall to look for my copy of the CD!!

This is the BEST CD out there! Dido's singing is smooth and shocking compared to other single singers. Her music in the background forms a feeling, doesn't it? I have No Angel and I love the keyboard, guitar, and singing in the music. Basically, her singing itself is hypnotical. Her music is different from today's R&B, pop, rock, and alternative music. I don't know where her music stands in a genre. But I don't care! I still love her music. The CD totally rocks. I reccomend it to people that have stress days or tense lives, because her music soothes. It's also depressing music so if you like it and hope something can bring you up or down, listen to DIDO.

I liked the songs on this album. They were catchy. I think she tries to hard to sound like Sarah McLachlan. If she'd sing normally (without trying to sound like Sarah McLachlan) I'd like the songs more. I'm a fan of Sarah McLachlan, and I like the basic sound, but it's not Dido's sound.

As a late twenty something, I am addicited to Roswell. I originally bought this CD to listen to the song ''here with me''. I figure I would take a chance on an unknown artist. What I found was the most wonderful album ever. I don't even know where to begin describing the beautiful, lush and almost unearthly songs/voice. All her songs are deeply moving and full of emotion. You can almost feel and see the passion with which Dido sings. Is there another artist out there that can even compare to Dido? No, I don't think so. I can't listen to this album enough, which I've owned for about a year.

I never watched Roswell but heard her christmas song while shopping in a record store and I was overwelmed by her voice. I immediately purchased this CD and I have played it almost non-stop since. I can't wait to hear her next CD.

This is definately the best CD in my collection, and the best I've ever bought! Dido has an amazing, soulful voice. Every song is unique and filled with neat little melodies and good lyrics. This is what a singer should be, not like Britney... If you like meaningful, real music, definately buy this!

As I listened to this album I heard my life through her songs. I could relate to every one. Each song has her own personal touch. And besides, people from England are really cool wangers.

I bought this cd for 'here with me' and I ended up loving all the songs (except one{after 'thank you'}) This cd is asome cause the music isn't too much 'rock' but not to slow to put you to sleep...

Dido has an amazing voice that anyone can appreciate. Unfortunately all of her songs have the same underlying ''my lover left me so i'm depressed'' tone. You know, the kind that makes you wanna smash dishes. I was thankful for her song Hunter to break up monotony. Giving her credit though, Here With Me and Thank You are excellent songs. Listen to this if you just went through a break up or have pent up anger and resentment towards an ex . . .
