Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Seventh grader Debbie Lowell is a new but avid ice hockey player, disappointed that her mom, Angie, is a total klutz at all the sports Debbie loves. Debbie's disconnect with her mom is all the more poignant because Debbie was adopted by her parents just a year ago, after years spent in foster care. If she and her mom have nothing in common, doesn't that mean that she is in the wrong family? Wouldn't it have been so much better if she could have Amelia's mom instead: Coach Steph, who coaches their hockey team? Diersch serves up plenty of sports action out on the ice, but gives it a deeper significance as Debbie struggles both to develop sportsmanship and to figure out what it means to be a family. Readers will cringe as Debbie tries to cultivate an instrumental friendship with Amelia to get closer to Coach Steph and pushes away her own mom's doomed attempts to find some activities they might share. Readers will get tears in their eyes as Debbie and Angie do manage to grow closer as mother and daughter, different as they are in talents, tastes, and temperament. It is not easy for any of us to negotiate the give-and-take of family life, and the lessons Debbie learns are valuable and enduring. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
