Those seeking tales of Souljah's rap career-or the controversy in which candidate Bill Clinton condemned her statements about the Los Angeles riots-must look elsewhere. This is a memoir of the author's surviving-the-ghetto life and her passionate relationships. ``What I am is natural and serious and as sensitive as an open nerve on an ice cube,'' declares Souljah at the outset, but her lightly edited vernacular tale-complete with large chunks of ``freely recreated'' dialogue-rarely has such style. Still, her story of childhood in the Bronx projects, where women on welfare accepted dissolute men as ``rentals,'' is chilling. Souljah's mom, admirably, encouraged her daughter's reading at an early age, and she grew-it's not too clear how-to gain a fervent sense of self and spirituality. Her portraits of people-including a Muslim boyfriend fighting his homosexuality, a female classmate at Rutgers University casually manipulating men for money and a dream boyfriend who lies about having a wife-should strike a chord with peers. Though Souljah's continual comments on Afrocentrism and white oppression are unfortunately Manichean, her closing advice to parents and to peers about successful relationships (``Remember: men will lie'') is, in the main, wisely cautionary. In 1992, rapper Sister Souljah made big news, provoking a response from then-candidate Clinton to her exhortation that black people should "take a week and kill white people." Sister Souljah's social philosophy, apparently, has not changed much. In this rambling, lurid autobiography of her pre-rap star years, she works to attribute each shortcoming, mistake, or problem of every African American to one cause: white oppression. Her true attitude and the purpose of her tale are both unclear. Aggrandizing (at length) her "spiritual eye" and devotion to God, she simultaneously revels in the abuse of other humans. Claiming a transcendent, ascetic disdain for uncommitted sex, she blithely luxuriates in a series of affairs. While the brief concluding chapter offers solid, sensible advice for young people, Sister Souljah's earlier boasts belie its convictions. Sister Souljah, rap singer, political activist, Warhol-type celebrity, has written a book that focuses on the people who have contributed to the development of the aware "sister" she has become. It reads like fiction; sometimes you have to remind yourself that this is the story of Souljah's life and not a fabrication of her imagination--until you read the chapters about people, places, and events that are unquestionably factual. Yet this material is incomplete. There is no mention of the Clinton incident nor is there an in-depth analysis of her relationship with Reverend Ben Chavis, who at that time was the director of the Commission for Racial Justice, a civil-rights agency of the United Church of Christ. Her rap career came about as a result of her political visibility, but she does not fully explore how that experience influenced her beliefs or views. She details her activities and involvement as a college and community activist, and her personal dedication to African American youth and the establishment of the African Youth Survival Camp. And it appears that men have also been a major area of development and distress for Souljah. Her continual discussions of the physical attributes and sexual behavior of the men and women who had influence in her life is a bit over the top on occasion. But the audience that will be interested in reading about Souljah's life will not be offended by her language. She ends the book with a message, "Listen Up! (Straighten It Out)," that is insightful and well written.

    A SOUL LIFTER

    This book kept me reding and anxious to know what was going to happen next through the wholr book.although i am young this book really changed the way of how i look at certain things such as the people around you.but i reccomend this book to any and everybody that can handle reading Sister Souljah's strong feelins and her thoughts of our world

    Eye-opener

    Again Souljah came real. though this book is not as good as The Coldest Winter Ever its still a must read. Souljah keeps it real. She should definetly write another novel.

    Absolutely Soul Shacking!

    Sister Souljah's soulful description of her life and those present in her life were both profound and thought provoking. I am astounded that the same issues that afflict Black Americans 25-40 years ago, still haunt us to this day. This book should be read every person of color. It opens ones eyes to authentic, pure truth of the state of our lives. The impoverished conditions under which we live, can be changed and Souljah proves that through education and exploration, one can be empowered! READ THIS BOOK!

    A Fellow Souljah...Amazing!

    I think Sister Souljah did a wonderful job keeping it real! She provides the reader with an abundance of blind-sighted information. It is especially amazing, because it's told through the eyes of a young woman. I would recommend to every African-American and then some, especially our youth!!

    Excellent!

    I can't believe how real she was in writing her experiences. She wrote about the good, bad, and ugly. I enjoyed every page. There isn't any man or woman that can not see themselves in at least one of these characters. While reading this book, I felt as if I've known her all her life, and that I watched her grow up into the woman that she is now. Every woman must read this book(and any man that wants to understand women).

    I definitely recommend this book

    Okay my friend gave me this book to read, I have 3 more chapters left, I admire Sister Souljah's courage, and activist spirit. I do however disagree with her the belief that she has regarding 'whites'and their oppression on blacks today . I don't agree with everything she does mention in this book of hers but I do however respect her writing and criticism because it holds much truth.

    Eye opener

    I believe that book helps black americans understand why we are the way that we are and gets us to stop blamming each other for our problems. It gives us something to think about before we dismiss our race as no good and lazy. I love the way she looks inside of the history behind the pretty white lines if you know what I mean. Thanks Sista Souljah enlighting our people and doing something our education.

    Souljah Is the BOMB

    No Disrespect is a book that will help open all our eyes (men&women) in helping us analyze how we live our lives,think about how we want to raise our children and brings the realization of how real male/female realtionships issues exist in all our lives. This book, without a doubt will made me think twice about how I'm living my life. Very inspirational, real- real as can be, and motivational. A definite reccommend to all, Souljah lets you into her life, which helps you realize that no one is invisible to pain. GET IT NOW!!!

    Inspirational

    All I can say is that this is a must read book. This woman is an inspiration to all of us or at least she should be. This is a great story; my dad actually recommended this to me. It's very detailed and dramatic and it has you wondering what could possibly happen next. It's hard to believe that this could really be about her life. I was not able to put it down, every chapter was another adventure.

    If YOUR TIRED OF BEING LIED TO THEN READ THE TRUTH

    This is an execellent book. This should be read in schools by children so they can know the truth from young. Im glad that such eloquence can be used by a women so young. I am only 16 and I thank GOD for the SISTA and her words. You may not know her, but you can relate to her. Don't listen to the mainstream reviews by people that do not want you to hear the truth. This book is a must read for EVERYONE! No matter what color you are, it doesn't matter. Be your own review and read the book, i read it in two days!!

    This book is one of the best African-American stories out right now.

    Sister Souljah's No Disrespect is the best book about I've read about a tale of an African-American. She explains what life was like dedicating each chapter to someone who has made a difference in her life. Sister Souljah tells it like it really is. Her words at the end make you think about the African-American race.

    One of the Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sister did her thing and got down with nothing but the TRUTH with this autobiographical novel. I was tripping out on her love escapades which showed how deceit is prevalent in this society which is really a shame. However, it occurs and should not be accepted by decent women of today. These lying a-- men need to stop the hypocracy that they dish out on a continuous basis. I just want the public at large to know if they read 'No Disrespect', they will be consumed and gain enormous respect for a sister that deserves credit when credit is due. Let me know when your next novel is released because I'm definitely one of your fans from henceforth and ever more. Thanks for the education. It was better than a PH.D degree. I'm a sistah also.

    very enlighting

    The book i am reading is called No DIsrespect by sister souljah.This book is about a lady who mad a diffrence in her life.. this story is also about love and her mother who raised her so i am guessing that she did not have a man in the house with her and its also about how people mistreated her.sister soiljah talks about the problems that black americans go through in there everday life.Sister souljah is the person thats being talked about alot.They talked about all the things thats happened and about the problems and everything that was yet to come.If her life story was in a diffrent place i would think that the things will still be the same because you can not stop the things that happend because thet are ment to happen for a reason.The 1st person in this story is very important because the story is about her if it was not for her the story would not be here.Sister Souljah is a very reliable perosn because she has been done so wrong thats she only has good in her.I think that this book is great because even through all the things she still remain strong so i give this book 2 thumbs up.

    God's Great Gift To Me
