    Best Pre-Algebra Math Book

As a former high school math teacher, who likes to do summer home school with my chidren, I am often in search of good math or language books. This is the best one I've found. In a few short chapters, this gem of a math book covers all the pre-algebra skills. I searched for a book that could do this simply and finally found this one. It is the best. Unfortunately, most math books pitched to the middle school level are riddled with distracting and haphazardly placed problems and examples. This book gets right to the heart of the essential pre-algebra skills in a concise way. These skills include such things as adding in a stack, mutliplying larger numbers, long division, order of operations, prime numbers, least commmon multiple, operations (+,-,x,/) with fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, square roots, negative numbers, proportions, and statistics. Although these sound like boring topics, they are presented in a simple and engaging way. The 'story' that has vignettes at the beginning of each chapter could be improved, it's a bit disjointed. But my daughter (7th grade) who tends to avoid math enjoyed the story and found the book more approachable because of it. Overall, this is an excellent book for review of pre-algebra skills. Because of it's simple, yet not condescending approach, it can be used across a range of ages and levels. Our youngest daughter (grade 5) to our oldest (grade 8) has benefited from this simple, clear, and focused book.

Story line is inappropriate to connect to math learning

If you are looking for a story line to catch the interest of anyone under 18, please read carefully the first few pages. I'm sure you will quickly realize that this is inappropriate at best.

The Only COMPLETE Step by Step Book on Basic Math

This book is a concise, VERY DETAILED overview of basic arithmetic methods. It is the only book I have ever seen (I am a mathematics major, I own hundreds of math books) that gives a real explanation of carrying in multiplication of multiple digit numbers. Having this book greatly simplified tutoring for me since my students now have detailed examples of how to perform every step of an arithmetic or pre algebra problem. The authors of this book get my thanks for a job well done.

    No Fear Math!

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and got a 97 on my SAT! This is definately the book for you if you've slacked all your studying towards the end of your courses. This makes an impossible lesson short enough and very simple to comprehend. 5 out of 5 stars!
