This short story makes me think of the pastors who raised these men in Christ. Though these men may have struggled in their walk with God they did return. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). In the Profession of Arms it is vital to maintain your walk with God, no one is guaranteed tomorrow. “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust” (Matt 5:45). Through two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan I’ve known Christians who have died in battle. There are no guarantees of coming home unscathed. Still there are Warriors who answer the call. “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send, And who shall go for us? Then I said, here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Great Book!
This is a very well written short story. The author has a great way of choosing words that really help you visualize the setting and feel the emotion of the key scenes. It is very readable and balanced in its use of technical military speak and references to faith, without being preachy. It was a quick read that kept me engaged from beginning to end. I'd definitely recommend this short novelette and am looking forward to reading the author's full first novel and getting to know the main character, Col. Sanchez, better.
I enjoyed this book. The story really grips you from the beginning to finish. I'd recommend this book to anyone who doesn't believe that people of strong faith and a sincere relationship with Jesus don't exist in a modern military.
This is a very relevant and readable novel for our times; a human triumph story that will move you from the inside out.
