Overview

Mama’s bad mood this afternoon has put Anna in a bad mood too. Now Anna doesn’t want anything to do with Mama. Daddy has to cut her meat, take her upstairs, tuck her in, and read her a bedtime story. But Anna doesn’t feel right about the way she and Mama have been today. She can’t go to sleep until they make up.

This touching picture book, accentuated by expressive illustrations, takes a sympathetic look at a familiar adult-and-child impasse and will strike a special chord with young children and their parents.

Anna is unhappy when her tired mother says no to all of her after-school plans but after an evening of letting only Daddy do things for her, Anna cannot go to sleep until she and Mama make up.

Children's Literature
Have you ever been in a bad mood, snapped at someone, and later regretted it? Such is the case in this simple story about Anna and her Mama. Having had a difficult day, Mama has a bad mood and refuses to indulge Anna. Not understanding why Mama is treating her this way, Anna quickly develops a bad mood too. After doting on Daddy all evening, refusing to interact with Mama, Anna realizes that she misses her Mama's role in putting her to bed and can not sleep until all is right. The story makes the reader realize that all of us sometimes have a bad day and that it is difficult to stay angry with those we love. With bold lines and vivid colors, the illustrations add to the story. In particular, the expressions on the faces of the animal characters help the young reader relate to the character's emotions. This picture book could be used as a teaching tool when discussing feelings and emotions in the classroom. 2004 (orig. 2002), Clarion Books, Ages 4 to 8.

Kirkus Reviews
Brun-Cosme offers a keen examination of how one family member's demeanor can upset the emotional balance of the household. Take one exhausted mother, add an exuberant child, save for later an unsuspecting father, shake-and you have a scenario that will be very familiar to young readers and their adults. When Anna returns from school, her mother's bad mood quickly deflates her own buoyant one. In reaction to a barrage of "no" answers, Anna retaliates in true tot style by switching her allegiance to Daddy. For the rest of the evening, she spurns all advances made by her mother. But Anna knows something's missing: the generous apology that comes from Mama validates Anna's emotions, while allowing for a heart-felt reconciliation. Backes's heavily pigmented illustrations have a spare quality that allows readers to focus on the message. His simply etched backgrounds keep reader's attention focused on the fox characters' emotions conveyed by their expressions and body language. A comforting balm to puzzled tots and their over-tired parents for readers younger than those of Charlotte Zolotow's classic The Quarreling Book. (Picture book. 3-6)

    My daughter loves this book

We brought this book home from the library, and within days my 2.5 year old had memorized it. I think it is a sweet story that helps kids understand that even though parents sometimes have bad days too, we still love them.
