All Music Guide - Ronnie D. Lankford
When Joan Baez began recording and performing during the late '50s and early '60s, she carved out a niche for herself as a remarkable singer of traditional music. In 1966 she released Noel, an album of seasonal songs notable for its variety and the fact that she sung two selections in German. One would expect to see "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "Deck the Halls," but Baez adds lesser-known gems like "Ave Maria" and "Coventry Carol," along with instrumental versions of "Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella" and "Adeste Fideles." The arrangements, while not unusual for a holiday album, were something new for a Baez album. Lutes, violas, harpsichord, strings, and wind ...

The arrangements, while not unusual for a holiday album, were something new for a Baez album. Lutes, violas, harpsichord, strings, and wind instruments provide a classical setting for Baez's lovely soprano. In this setting, her voice becomes more formal and mannered. The 2001 reissue of Noel also includes several bonus tracks, including a French version of "Away in a Manger." Baez's fans will probably be split on the quality of the album. Fans of her early traditional albums will find these arrangements and stylized vocals miles away from folk music; fans of Baez's pure soprano who never concerned themselves with genre purity will find Noel a must-have album for the holidays.

Noel-Best Christmas Album of the 20th Century!

I have collected Christmas music for over 25 years and I have never found any other Christmas cd to surpass Noel by Joan Baez. When the commercialization of Christmas starts to overwhelm me, I pull out Noel and am transported back to the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus's Birth, Family Togetherness and Eternal Love.

    Wasn't That A Time?

Yes. I remember the day I came home with this. I hitch-hike to Stanford, bought the LP at the campus bookstore, walked all the way to the old Kepler's Bookstore and let Ira Sandpearl suggest a couple of books. I took the bus to San Carlos reading "Gandhi and Non-violence" and walked a couple miles home. I listened to this recording endlessly that Christmas and it was formative. Now, all these years later, I'm still moved by the arrangements and vocals. It's still a significant part of every Christmas.

    Unique orchestration

Although Joan's voice's vibrato can be a bit wild, this is my all-time favorite Christmas album. Peter Schickele's instrumentation of these carols is as fresh and exciting in 2001 as it was in the initial release of 1996. I highly recommend this collection, especially for the instrumentation.

    A Breathtaking Christmas Journey

I have been listening to this recording since I was five years old, and every year it grows more seasoned and beautiful. Joan Baez is famous for her lofting natural soprano; here the voice is simply ethereal. The musical arrangements by Peter Shickele have a lovely Renaissance flavor, and Joans phrasing and intonation are superbly effective. Her version of Silent Night must be the most pure and warm and perfect of any singer in any genre I have ever heard. Buy this album and enrich your Christmas memories.
