Overview

Special Agent John Puller, combat veteran and the army's most tenacious investigator, is back in this action-packed thriller from worldwide #1 bestselling author David Baldacci.

NO MAN'S LAND

Two men. Thirty years.

John Puller's mother, Jackie, vanished thirty years ago from Fort Monroe, Virginia, when Puller was just a boy. Paul Rogers has been in prison for ten years. But twenty years before that, he was at Fort Monroe. One night three decades ago, Puller's and Rogers' worlds collided with devastating results, and the truth has been buried ever since.

Until now.

Military investigators, armed with a letter from a friend of Jackie's, arrive in the hospital room of Puller's father—a legendary three-star now sinking into dementia—and reveal that Puller Sr. has been accused of murdering Jackie.

Aided by his brother Robert Puller, an Air Force major, and Veronica Knox, who works for a shadowy U.S. intelligence organization, Puller begins a journey that will take him into his own past, to find the truth about his mother.

Paul Rogers' time is running out. With the clock ticking, he begins his own journey, one that will take him across the country to the place where all his troubles began: a mysterious building on the grounds of Fort Monroe. There, thirty years ago, the man Rogers had once been vanished too, and was replaced with a monster. And now the monster wants revenge. And the only person standing in his way is John Puller.

Bestseller Baldacci makes the implausible plausible in his riveting fourth thriller featuring U.S. Army criminal investigator John Puller (after 2014’s The Escape). Thirty years after Puller’s mother, Jackie, disappeared from Virginia’s Fort Monroe, a neighbor at the time, now terminally ill, has written the authorities to make a devastating claim. Although Puller’s soldier father was believed to have been abroad on the fateful night, new evidence has emerged that he was in the vicinity when Jackie vanished, and that coupled with the dying neighbor’s belated accusations that he murdered her has led to a reopening of the dormant case. Puller, naturally, ignores requests to stay out of the investigation and finds that some logical avenues of inquiry weren’t pursued at the time. Meanwhile, brutal Paul Rogers, who has been discharged from prison, embarks on a quest of his own, whose purposes are initially artfully concealed. Baldacci maintains tension throughout and imbues his characters with enough humanity to make readers care what happens to them. Agent: Aaron Priest, Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency. (Nov.)
From the Publisher
"One of the most compelling characters in David Baldacci's thrillers is John Puller, a crackerjack investigator of military crimes...Twists and turns come fast and furious in the best Baldacci tradition. THE ESCAPE is much more than a thriller. It's a moving tale of two military brothers and their father, a retired Army general and fighting legend now suffering from dementia. Emotionally intense, THE ESCAPE is Baldacci's best to date."—Associated Press"

A heck of an opening chapter, guaranteed to jettison readers into hours of addictive reading...Baldacci's last few books have been among the best in his long, busy career, and THE ESCAPE stands near the top for sheer adrenalin-fueled entertainment. It's alarmingly topical, too, taking us into the intelligence community and raising questions about privacy rights in the age of government surveillance and other buzz-worthy issues (no spoilers here). Indeed, the crime at the center of THE ESCAPE could have been pulled from recent newspaper headlines. Who says thrillers have to be the stuff of escapist fantasies?"—Richmond Times-Dispatch"

Highly entertaining...THE ESCAPE is a terrific read."—CT News"

A phenomenal read, as usual, from David Baldacci-don't miss it!"—BookLoons.com on The Escape
"

Readers expect excitement and intrigue in David Baldacci's books, and Zero Day is no exception...As Baldacci's new hero narrowly escapes countless close calls, the pairing of the author's imagination and knowledge create a wild ride for the reader. Puller is gutsy, brash and likable. Best of all, he survives to reappear in the next book of this new series."—The Free-Lance Star on Zero Day"

Zero Day is a nifty, paranoid thriller disguised as a murder mystery, and Baldacci advances it at a speedy clip with a nice mix of intrigue, tantalizing clues and the occasional explosion...Baldacci's books are fast-paced battles between good and evil."—Richmond Times Dispatch on Zero Day"

Baldacci is a master when it comes to writing about small-town conspiracies and a lone hero who fights against all odds to clean up corruption. The narrative moves slowly, so the reader has a chance to solve the case along with Puller. It might seem straightforward, but the final reveal will surprise even hardcore thriller junkies."—The Washington Post on The Forgotten
"

Rife with intriguing, memorable characters and tense situations....deftly providing solid escapism in an exceptionally fast-pace tale."—Lansing State Journal on The Forgotten

Crazy stretched story. But i read a story to be entertained and enjoy the characters. And this one imperfectly delivered. Puller. Knox. Bobby. Sr. And AWOL. Am I glad that I sat reading for the last 2 days? Yes. Could it have been better yes? But that's ok.

I finished it for some reason, but it was not worth my time This autjor is not the Baldacci of the esrly books Maybe it was written by a computer or a junior writer and they just put Baldaccis name on it for marketing

Ridiculous bunch of garbage. Wild and preposterous story line. Almost could not finish. Baldacci took a good franchise/character and ruined them. Waste of time.

I wanted to like this but it's lazy storytelling. I certainly had reason to expect better from this author.

Another great book from David Baldacci. I enjoy the John Puller series. Each book gets more and more interesting. This one involves the disappearance of his mother 30 years before. His books keep you interested right up until the end. And even the ending leaves you wondering. I've been a Baldacci reader since I first read The Camel Club books. I was sold then and continue to be a follower. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Two seemingly unrelated paths collide in an adrenaline-fueled journey through the talented creation of author David Baldacci. The dual narration by Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy enhances this thriller. Both narrators have great timing and perfect pitch. Their mannerisms and accents add depth to the story bringing the various characters to life with their own unique voice. The story moves at a fast pace and holds the listener’s attention from beginning to end. The story moves back and forth between the two core characters (John Puller and Paul Rogers) smoothly. Baldacci weaves a story of intrigue, mystery, and suspense that will have you trying to guess the surprising outcome. As the paths of the characters begin to cross back and forth, deeper secrets come to light. The characters are well-developed and realistic despite experimental elements. Baldacci creates such personalities you even may pull for one of the bad guys. A thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat till the find word, NO MAN’S LAND is riveting and can be listened to on its own. You don’t want to miss this thriller. FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this audio book was sent to me by the publisher. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

I enjoyed this book. The science in the book was a little far fetched but who knows what the military is up to.
