Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Lindsay Stallings, MA(George Washington University)
Description: This book provides a very simplified overview of stuttering and the variety of available treatment options. A CD included with the book demonstrates anti-stuttering devices.
Purpose: Although not stated by the author, the purpose as noted in the title is to provide a "multifactorial guide to stuttering therapy." Although many treatment options are addressed, including fluency shaping and pharmacological interventions, the emphasis is on anti-stuttering devices.
Audience: The book is intended for people who stutter and their families. The author, the founder of a company producing anti-stuttering devices, is also is a person who stutters and throughout the book recounts personal stories to which many readers may relate.
Features: This book provides an introduction to stuttering, its etiologies, treatments, and other factors that affect a person who stutters. Emphasis is on auditory processing as an etiology and anti-stuttering devices as a treatment method. Chapters also cover documented listener reactions, famous people who stutter, and stuttering support groups. Professional jargon is explained throughout the book and the overall tone is informal.
Assessment: Although it provides a broad overview of stuttering and its treatment, this book does not provide any new information. Other books addressing this material have provided readers with similar content in a more organized and less biased fashion. That said, the informal tone of the book and personal anecdotes of the author may be appealing attributes to readers looking for a casual introduction to the material.
