Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ann Sanger
Dicky Donkey wakes his owner and all the neighbors every morning with his EEE-Orrh! EEE-Orrh! The neighbors, appropriately named Mrs. Moany, Mrs. Moody, and Mr. Misery, march over to complain and demand that Dicky Donkey must go. Poor Dicky Donkey is so upset that he loses his EEE-Orrh! His mistress takes him to the animal hospital. The neighbors soon learn they depended on Dicky Donkey as their alarm clock to get them up in the morning. With apologies all around, Dicky's EEE-Orrh is back. The illustrations are charming and creative. Monk uses scraps of photographs to create a collage effect, from a photo of animal hair on the donkey, to patterns of checks and floral for clothing. Bold and bright, the background of each page is vivid and full of life. My favorite background (gold with streaks of yellow, dotted with bright orange stars) is a two-page spread showing Dicky has recovered his EEE-Orrh! Short in length with limited words on each page makes this an excellent choice for a bedtime story. Young children will be able to pick out the repetition of words and enjoy retelling the story again and again.
Kirkus Reviews
The braying of Dicky Donkey annoys everyone in town, but are they better off without it? The unnamed little girl who tells the story is awakened every morning by the "eee-orrh!" of Dicky Donkey, so she doesn't need an alarm clock. The same goes for neighbors Miss Moany, Mrs. Moody and Mr. Misery, but they are not so happy about it. Their complaints drive Dicky into a sad silence that even the local doctor can't cure. Only when the complainers start oversleeping do they realize how valuable Dicky's braying was. It doesn't take much convincing by these remorseful citizens to get Dicky happy and braying again. Monks's unique illustrations-bold paint-and-collage crammed with fun shapes and a riot of colors-are far superior to her so-so story, and more humorous, to boot. They should attract young listeners.
