No Place Like Home

Overview

The lovable Mole and his friends are back in a delightfully snug story that shows us there really is no place like home.

Mole thinks his burrow is small and dark and dull, so he sets off to find somewhere big and bright and beautiful instead. His friends Hedgehog, Squirrel, and Rabbit are full of ideas — a hollow log that's too big and drafty, an empty bird's nest that feels a bit dangerous, a nice niche beside a waterfall that's, well, a little too splashy. Finding a new home ...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Have you ever wanted a new home? Join Mole as he searches for a new home in this charming, easy-to-read picture book. Mole's burrow is small, dark, and dull. Mole sets off in search of a new home. First, he meets Hedgehog. Mole tries to feel at home in Hedgehog's log, but the wind makes Mole cold. Next, Mole meets Squirrel. Mole tries to feel at home in Squirrel's nest, but he is too afraid of falling out. Mole continues his journey and meets Rabbit who takes him to a hollow beside a sparkling waterfall. But Mole gets splashed. Then it starts to rain. Mole leads the group back to his old home where he declares, "It's not big, bright, or beautiful but it feels just right to me." The text and illustrations of this book create a fabulous picture book story for young readers. Readers young and old will identify with the theme of recognizing that what we like is not always what we need. 2004, Candlewick Press, Ages 3 to 5.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-One morning, Mole decides that he is tired of living underground. He wants to live someplace that is "BIG and BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL instead." His friends, Hedgehog, Rabbit, and Squirrel, help him look for a new home, but he finds problems with each suggested location. In the end, Mole returns to his old home because it feels just right. Children will love these cozy characters, and Cabban's lush, grass-green watercolors are a perfect reflection of their world.-Kelley Rae Unger, Peabody Institute, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Taking full advantage of the fact that even the most trite sentiments will be new to young children, Emmett and Cabban send the mole introduced in Bringing Down the Moon (2001) off to find a new home that's "BIG and BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL." Gamboling through open, idyllic woods and meadows, Mole tries out alternatives offered by fuzzy friends Hedgehog, Squirrel and Rabbit. After discovering that a hollow log is BIG but drafty, an abandoned treetop nest is BRIGHT but precarious, and a streamside cove is BEAUTIFUL but wet, he returns to his spacious, well-lit, comfortable burrow, quoting the title line as if it were his own. Such similar but more adventuresome quests as Eric Carle's House For Hermit Crab (1987) or Liesel Moak Skorpen's We Were Tired Of Living In A House, illustrated by Joe Cepeda (1999), have far more to offer readers than this bland, superficial outing. (Picture books. 4-6)

Meet the Author

Jonathan Emmett has written many books for children, including his first story about Mole, BRINGING DOWN THE MOON. Of NO PLACE LIKE HOME, he says, "Mole has difficulty recognizing that the things he finds attractive aren't always suited to his needs. I think that's something that many people will relate to, whether they're choosing a new house or a new pair of shoes."

Vanessa Cabban is the illustrator of DOWN IN THE WOODS AT SLEEPYTIME by Carole Lexa Schaefer, BRINGING DOWN THE MOON by Jonathan Emmett, and many others. She says, "I liked seeing Mole's journey as he realizes the world is an exciting place but the things he knows and loves are what make him happy."
