School Library Journal
Gr 3 Up—Clad in a Mad Hatter-type hat and an airbrushed suit, Michael Moodoo, a professional animator and former elementary school art teacher, explains and demonstrates how to draw wizards, castles, and dragons. The animation and background music is a bit hokey. Moodoo offers clear, concise, step-by-step instructions. Teachers and students should be aware that there are lots of "secret shapes" (egg, mountain, ice cream cone) that need to be practiced before drawing the final products. Make sure students have a big pile of scrap paper and pencils with erasers so that they can practice. Once these shapes are mastered, students will have no problem drawing these objects. Moodoo does a fine job of explaining concepts such as 3-D design and perspective. A great video for art units on fantasy figures.—Ivy Miller, Wyoming Seminary Upper School, Kingston, PA
Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
Adapted from Problem Solving 101, this short volume gives solid, practical advice for solving problems common to middle-schoolers. First, the reader is introduced to Sofie Sigh, Chris Critic, Darla Dreamer, and Gary Go-Getter who personify typical responses to problems such as giving up, blaming others, simply dreaming, or trying too hard. Problem solving skills such as preparing logic trees are presented. Then three specific cases are discussed with step-by-step problem solving using the tools that have been presented. While some of the scenarios such as finding a soccer school in Brazil may be extreme, the advice is valid. Readers are given specific examples for breaking down problems to develop logic trees, matrices, and hypotheses. Troubleshooting methods are included for times when the parameters of the solution must be changed. Cartoon characters and clearly written charts accompany the text for easier understanding. This fun book could prove helpful for anyone of any age, but particularly for younger readers. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
