Overview

More than twenty New York Times bestselling authors team up to create a first-rate serial novel -- a collaboration that combines the skills of America’s greatest storytellers to produce a gripping, spellbinding mystery.

“The lineup of writers who have contributed to this mystery is akin to the Murderers’ Row of the 1927 New York Yankees. There is not a weak spot in the bunch.”

—David Baldacci, from the Introduction

Alexander McCall Smith. Sandra Brown. Faye Kellerman. J.A. Jance. Jeffery Deaver. Kathy Reichs. Lisa Scottoline. Jeff Lindsay. These are only a handful of the names that make up the all-star lineup of authors behind No Rest for the Dead, a tale of vengeance, greed, and love that flows seamlessly, in the words of David Baldacci, “as it passes from one creator's mind to the next.”

When Christopher Thomas, a ruthless curator at San Francisco’s McFall Art Museum, is murdered and his decaying body is found in an iron maiden in a Berlin museum, his wife, Rosemary, is the primary suspect, and she is tried, convicted and executed. Ten years later, Jon Nunn, the detective who cracked the case, is convinced that the wrong person was put to death. In the years since the case was closed, he's discovered a web of deceit and betrayal surrounding the Thomases that could implicate any number of people in the crime. With the help of the dead woman's friend, he plans to gather everyone who was there the night Christopher died and finally uncover the truth, suspect by suspect. Solving this case may be Nunn’s last chance for redemption … but the shadowy forces behind Christopher’s death will stop at nothing to silence the past forever.

In this innovative storytelling approach, each of these twenty-five bestselling writers brings their distinctive voice to a chapter of the narrative, building the tension to a shocking, explosive finale. No Rest for the Dead is a thrilling, page-turning accomplishment that only America’s very best authors could achieve.

From the Introduction of No Rest for the Dead:

There is always that case, the one that keeps me awake at night, the one that got away. It’ll always be there, gnawing at the edges of my mind. It doesn’t matter that ten years have passed, it doesn’t matter that the case is officially closed. An innocent woman was executed, I was the one who helped make it happen, and on the sad night when the needle was inserted into her arm, injecting her with death, part of my life ended too.

It never felt right, never made sense. Sure, there was motive and opportunity, there was the physical evidence. But if you met her, if you knew her the way I got to know her . . . It wasn’t until later, after I’d taken a step back from the case, that I realized it had angles I hadn’t seen, layers I hadn’t uncovered, back when it mattered, back when I could have saved her….

    No Rest for the Reader

No Rest For The Dead is a who done it in the true sense, a modern day Sherlock Holmes. What makes this novel even more impressive is that it was written by 26 different authors, many of whom you've read (and enjoyed) in their own books. As a writer of seven novels myself, I can attest to the difficulty in bringing together so many diverse writing styles in a manner that makes it all appear seamless. Kudos to the editors, Andrew and Lamia Gulli, for their dedication and skill. It paid off, as I finished No Rest for the Dead in little over a day; it moves quickly and leaves no rest for the reader.

    Highly Recommended

This book was written by 26 different mystery/thriller authors who exercised immense discipline by keeping the storyline intact, the characters consistent, and the plot interesting. Although each author's unique style is evident, (that's what I was looking for when I picked up this novel!) the story flows seamlessly-no jarring shifts in characterization, plot, or mood.

The book starts with a haunting diary entry by a cop who was responsible for convicting an innocent woman who was eventually executed. Next, the timeline moves back ten years to Rosemary Thomas's last night on earth as she sits in her prison cell awaiting execution for the murder of her philandering museum curator husband-a murder she knows she didn't commit even though most of the evidence pointed to her. We then go back to the months leading up to Christopher Thomas's murder and Rosemary's arrest and then we're back in the present day, where Jon Nunn, the cop who failed the first time intends to find out who really killed Christopher Thomas. In the last ten years he's learned of Thomas's shady connections involving drugs, stolen art and possibly worse and the murderer could be any number of friends, lovers, or "hanger-ons" associated with the Rosemary and Christopher Thomas. In addition to being a modern-day thriller, with chapters by Jeffery Deaver, Sandra Brown, John Lescroart, Kathy Reichs, Lisa Scottoline, there are also noir elements to this book and the Thomases dysfunctional marriage and Nunn's obsession with Rosemary Thomas harken back to Raymond Chandler as well as Vera Caspary's "Laura"-updated for a new generation of readers.

No Rest for the Dead is an unforgettable, fast-paced thriller as each of these bestselling authors follows where the other left off all the way until the shocking twist at the end.

    Wonderful must read thriller

Simply said, you will love this thriller. It has everything, a gripping plot, great characters, a hero you can cheer on and sympathize with, a surprise ending where you"ll won't know what hit you.
Imagine 26 writers working on a book together, sounds like chaos but this book doesn't have chaos, it has all their unique styles and yet the book reads quickly--maybe in this day and age it does take 26 writers to write a great book!

Fun read, but not without problems

There can be problems when you have 26 writers contributing to one story...flow, character development, and continuity are chief among those...and this story suffers from all three. It should be the editor's job to make sure the story flows smoothly, but this one doesn't. I found myself wondering less about what happens next and more about what part of the story would be revealed and why. The story moved, but more in a herky-jerky fashion than a steady flow. Character development suffered in this story. I guess that is a real risk when you have 26 people, each with a different vision of who the major characters are and the roles they play in the story. Because of this, the contributors tend to ignore development beyond the basics altogether. Again, it's the editor who needs to keep them on track, yet he can't do that without inserting his own vision of the characters. Continuity is less of an issue here, but there are a few leaps and bounds that keep the reader wondering how they got there. All that said, I did enjoy the story. The different contributors each brought their A game...I do wish some of them were given a little more leash, though. Perhaps fewer writers given longer or multiple chapters would help fix most of the issues. The story is a good one and the chase scene at the end is brilliantly written. Contrary to Baldacci's belief, I DID figure out the end, but it didn't detract from the rest of the story. Enjoy this one on the plane, at the beach or by the pool. I don't think you'll be disappointed!!

Fantastic! A summer must read book

A great thriller that had me on the edge of my seat with a top notch line up of authors from Diana Gabaldon, Lisa Scottoline, Jeffery Deaver, R.L. Stine, Sandra Brown, Faye Kellerman and Alexander McCall Smith. The question was, can all these different writers and egos meld into a cohesive book and the answer was most definitely. This was neither a mystery or a thriller, had great elements of both, the book starts as a mystery but with each passing page the suspense deepens to the explosive and unexpected finale. On another note, all proceeds are going to a cancer charity, so I not only enjoyed the book but was happy that the money was going to a good cause. I contacted the publishers asking if a sequel was in the cards, since I'd like to be the first pre-order it.

    No Rest for the Dead

I thought the concept of No Rest for the Dead was a unique one; twenty-six authors write a chapter our two telling a story. I also thought that it would be a little disjointed, but these mystery writers ended up writing a great book.

The story revolves around the tenth anniversary of the execution of Rosemary Thomas, who was convicted of murdering her husband. Even ten years later, the investigation officer has doubts that she was guilty.

Although each author took a chapter or scene, the book flowed evenly and if you are a fan of one or all of these authors you could tell their writing style (although each chapter has a heading with the author's name). They kept the story going as with the action, and keeps reader (me) absorbed in the story.

The intro may be by Baldacci but this group effort by several excellent authors is, so far, average at best.

No Rest for the Dead a Novel written by 26 Top Thriller Authors

It's not an anthology. It is a fully formed, very entertaining,
nail-biting thriller novel. Each chapter is written by a different
author in their own voice, but I can assure you the story is fluid and
    cohesive.
We follow a group of individuals who were instrumental in a case
against Rosemary Thomas who is accused of killing her philandering
husband and stuffing him in an Iron Maiden. She is convicted and she
is put to death. But even in death there is no rest, not for any of
    them.
Flash forward ten years. Jon Nunn, the detective who helped put her
away is convinced she is innocent and when he decides to
re-investigate, to find redemption for himself and justice for
Rosemary. But, of course it's never easy. The journey that Nunn
goes on keeps you turning the page and wanting more right up to the
    very end.
This is a thriller with mystery elements and lots of drama, reflection
and entertainment. Readers who love thrillers are going to devour
this. You may be amazed at who contributed to this
book! I highly recommend checking out the site, but even more, I
    highly recommend reading this novel.

    A Five Star Suspense Novel

When you open up a serial novel or exquisite corpse (another term for it), you have pretty low expectations. You expect to find plot problems and choppy styles, with No Rest for the Dead I found none of that. The styles were different but they in NO way held the plot, the plot was quick, smart, full of twists and turns. Good editing job, and a great job by these 26 writers who were operating at the highest level. I just wish more thrillers like this were written today; a smart book, that can entertain you for hours without feeling like you're reading something from the cookie cutter school of thriller writers.

    Fantastic thriller

A great book, a book to savor and take your time reading. Writers who I didn't really care for wrote excellent chapters and now I'm going to give them a second chance. You'll be on the edge of your seat reading this thriller. Its fast paced, yet smart, sort of like a thinking person's mystery and the ending...wow! I didn't see that coming. Great chapters by Matthew Pearl, Jeffery Deaver, Jeff Abott, Kathy Reichs, and Alexander McCall Smith make this a winner.

    A Must Read Thriller!

I have to say I was overwhelmed by this fantastic effort by the likes of Alexander McCall Smith, R.L. Stine, J A Jance, Faye Kellerman, Diana Gabaldon, Sandra Brown, the list goes on and on. You have to read this thriller. Great character developement, a great plot, and what I really loved is that the unique styles of the authors was there to see yet that never slowed down the book.
The editing was super and I was turning pages and reading it so quickly at times I felt like was transformed to the locale of San Fran.

I highly recommend this book. It is a fast-paced mystery that keeps you eager to read the next page, then the next and so on. The chapters flow so easily that you would never guess that they were written by different authors. Get it! Read it! Enjoy! Kudos to all the authors and editors for a job well done. And the profits go to cancer charity, too. Oh, did I say how much I loved this book? LOL. ELR

    Very Forgettable

I bought this because I am a Jeffrey Deaver fan. I got the sample Nook Book and thought I would give it a try. The premise of the book is intriguing and I definitely wanted to "figure it out." I thought it would be interesting to read something put together by all of these authors. Don't believe David Baldacci's intro that you can't figure it out. The book is only 244 pages which should have been a clue: there is weak character development, the sub plots are choppy and not well coordinated with the main plot, and the main plot is easy enough to figure out once the description of the body is provided. I definitely wouldn't waste my time or money on this unless you are looking for a mindless read that you will forget about tomorrow.

    Interesting concept

Although the concept of several writers collaberating on one story is intriquing the end result was not flawless. From chapter to chapter one becomes aware of the changes in writing styles. The change is not dramatical and the story flows nicely, but as a whole, I prefer better quality writing. For example, a few chapters are excerpts from a character's diary. In these chapters, the reader forgets he is reading a diary because the author regresses into narrative form, complete with outside dialogue which is not something a character would include in a diary. The diary should be the character's view of events, not a place for dialogue unless that dialogue is directly related to that character and has in some way effected that character to the point he feels he needs to write it down to express his view of the dialogue and that was not the case.

    Mystery Fans will Enjoy!

What happens when twenty-six mystery and thriller writers decide to write a story? I can't imagine trying to coordinate such a massive collaboration. Who conceived this idea? How would one go about outlining it, then getting everybody to agree to contribute their little part? Whatever the process, "No Rest for the Dead" is a mulligan stew of authors that somehow pulls off a neat, little mystery.
It starts with the execution of Rosemary Thomas for the heinous murder of her art dealer husband, Christopher. We then read about the events leading up to the murder: Christopher's philandering, money problems and a systematic operation of stealing and selling expensive paintings. We see the obsessed cop bring the guilty party to justice, and then have second thoughts.
Maybe he missed something. Maybe he didn't fully investigate some of the variables. Ten years after the state of California has executed Rosemary, the cast gathers for a memorial. The now ex-cop is still on the trail of a murderer while a shadowy figure lurks in the background, threatening several individuals if the truth is revealed. Will the truth finally be told? What really happened that fateful night so long ago?
There's a little bit of suspense, a few instances of character insight, a little action, a little bit of forensics.basically, a little bit of each author's specialty, but not enough to take the story in different or confusing directions. The book reads straight with a consistent voice.
Mystery fans will enjoy this experiment with many of their favorite writers coming together to produce a fine product.

    Highly Recommended - Interesting concept

I really enjoyed this book as you never knew what the next author was going to put in the mix. They did a REAL GOOD job of working together and coming up with a very interesting story and facts.
