Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Main's winning second Jane Serrano mystery (after 2005's Murder of the Month), Sheriff Arnie Kraft of Juniper, Ore., focuses on Jane's friend, bridal boutique owner Alix Boudreau, after a dead man found in a rental car is identified as Alix's first and worst ex-husband, Hunter Blackburn, a con man who's made a career of bilking the elderly. Lovable Bible-quoting Minnie Salter, a member of Murder of the Month, Jane's reading group at Thornton's Books, insists on following her own hunches, while omnipresent Velda Kubek takes every opportunity away from caring for her aging aunt to involve herself in Minnie's investigations. Since many of the older people who meet at Thornton's were victims of Blackburn's scams, they, too, fall under suspicion. Jane adds some intelligent sleuthing to Arnie's inept efforts to unmask the murderer in this fun, spotlessly clean cozy. (July)
Kirkus Reviews

The murder of a con artist shakes things up in Juniper, Oreg.

Jane Serrano, founder of the Murder of the Month Book Club, has already solved one murder (Murder of the Month,2005). Now she must try again to keep a friend from going to jail. So many people in town have been taken by con artists that you'd think there'd be a whole slew of suspects when one of the scammers is killed. But the inept local lawman finds his No. 1 suspect in Jane's friend Alix. It's true enough that much-married Alix had bona fide reasons to dislike the victim, who just happened to be her first husband. But her particulars don't exactly add up to a criminal background: She's the owner of the Wedding Belle Bridal Shop, where Jane's daughter Bianca and her dog Wendell work. (Wendell hires out as a ring bearer and is a big hit if Bianca can keep him away from the canapés.) Naturally, Jane is egged on to investigate by members of the book club, especially Minnie and Velda, who yearn to be detectives. Balancing her job at the bookstore, her romance with Nick, a lawyer who can be counted on to help Alix, and the time she spends investigating keeps Jane constantly on the go until the real murderer almost puts paid to her detective career.

Main's sophomore outing features some amusing characters, but Jane is still a clueless sleuth.

    a super amateur sleuth

In Juniper, Oregon, con artist Hunter Blackburn is found dead in the trunk of a rental. Sheriff Arnie Kraft thinks the late Hunter's former wife Wedding Belle Bridal Shop owner Alix Boudreau killed the grafter who targeted the elderly.

At Thornton's Books, Alix's friend Jane Serrano and her Murder of the Month Book Club members think otherwise. One of the group participants Minnie Salter decides to follow her bible citing intuition and investigate. Velda Kubek joins Minnie as an excuse to escape her care-giving of her elderly aunt. Jane, whose daughter works for the prime suspect, knows many of the older Thornton customers and other Juniper residents lost money to Hunter's schemes so while Arnie fumbles she looks in that direction.

The second Jane Serrano amateur sleuth (see Murder of the Month) is a super amateur sleuth as Jane, encouraged by Velda quoting the bible and Minnie wanting to become a detective, leads the inquiry. Filled with humor, fans will enjoy the investigation by Jane and company as they look like amateurs by fumbling on the case but next to the sheriff they look like pros.

When Jane¿s friend Alix gets involved in murder, the mystery d

When Jane’s friend Alix gets involved in murder, the mystery devotees of the Murder of the Month book club quite naturally expect her to solve it because, after all, she did it once before, didn’t she? Jane can’t seem to convince them otherwise but then her hackles are raised by the lazy sheriff who jumps to a conclusion she’s sure is wrong and who won’t even consider other possibilities. Obviously, Jane will have to find the killer before Alix is sent up the river.

Ms. Main has a nice touch with crafting a puzzle and I have to confess to being distracted, as intended, by the red herrings here and there. I was also distracted, in a very good way, by the chuckles that ensued whenever the book club members were on the scene, especially when they take a road trip, but it was also clear that these folks cared a lot about each other and they made smalltown life seem very appealing. And can I please have some of Minnie’s weaponry cookies?

I really want to spend some more time with Jane, Minnie and the rest of the gang—including the loveable Wendell, dog extraordinaire— so I hope Ms. Main is going to give us a third book sooner rather than later.
