Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jyotsna Sreenivasan
As one of 6 children, Francie O'Leary is tired of not having a place of her own. At home, she must share her mother's attention with Francie's twin brother and sister. She has no privacy. She shares a bedroom with her other sister and brother. At school, she shares her friends with people she doesn't even like. Francie decides to build a place of her own where she can bring her friends. Her task is to convert an old shed into a clubhouse. Everyone at home is too busy with projects of their own to help Francie. With all of the commotion at home, will Francie's clubhouse be ready in time for the first meeting of the Comics Club? This chapter book holds the answer. It is a quick read with a satisfying, but predictable ending. No Room for Francie is suitable particularly for seven- and eight-year-old girls.

Gr 2-3Libraries with a constant demand for beginning chapter books will be interested in these offerings. Each one has a prominently displayed designated reading level in the upper left-hand corner of the cover as well as detailed information describing its age appropriateness. Three of the titles involve family dynamics while the fourth, The Banana Split from Outer Space, is a wacky adventure at a pig-operated roadside ice-cream stand. The events in the other three books will be familiar to most childrenthe loss of a first tooth, disagreements with siblings or best friends, the need for eyeglasses, and learning to hit a baseball are a few of the plot lines. The large print and black-and-white illustrations add to the appeal. Children who are comfortable with the "First Stepping Stones'' series (Random) will enjoy these titles, too.Maura Bresnahan, Topsfield Town Library, MA
