Overview

Yarns made from plant fibers, modern synthetics, and silk take the spotlight in this collection of 21 classic knitting patterns for socks, scarves, hats, bags, vests, sweaters, and even a luxurious bathrobe. Some knitters are discouraged by the thought of baggy hemp sweaters and droopy cotton socks when they consider vegetable fibers, but this authoritative, fun, and light-hearted guide promises that, while wool has no equal when it comes to elasticity and warmth, the right tricks and techniques produce non-wool fashions that fit well, wear well, and hang beautifully. Knitters are taught to knit swatches to study the behavior of a yarn, to choose an appropriate pattern, and to master techniques for reinforcing stitches and inserting knit-ins of springier yarn to keep cotton, silk, and other fibers from sagging. Key information about durability, weight, pilling, and special handling is provided for acrylic, bamboo, cotton, hemp, Ingeo, linen, lycra, nylon, polyester, rayon, silk, soy, Tencel, and viscose yarns, and a chapter of helpful tips advises on needles to use (and avoid), how to start new balls and weave in ends, how to work intarsia and Fair Isle patterns, smart ways to control the cost of materials, and the right methods for washing, drying, and blocking the finished pieces.

Editorial Reviews

About.com Guide to Knitting
A wise and fun look at the world of options available to those who don't work with wool.
Anchorage Daily News
Singer has done an excellent job of defining the design elements of alternative fibers. . . . Her approach with this book is refreshing.
Craft
Comprehensive info on knitting with alternatives [to wool]. The book is also filled with beautiful knitting patterns; you'll find yourself drooling over the variety of projects you can knit.
Knitter's Review
If the mere notion of reading about warm fibers has you down, Amy Singer's anti-wool manifesto will come in handy.
Knitting Newscast
A great place to get educated about using nonwool yarn.
The Detroit News
Take the itchin' out of your stitchin' with nonwool fibers, but achieve the same fabulous look. . . you get with wool.
Yarn Market News
Open[s] up a whole world of wool-free fibers ... the patterns are to die for.
KLIATT
This is an amazing book because it features only non-wool fibers. The first part contains a great deal of information about many different fibers and what they can and cannot do. Singer is positive and focuses on what they can do. She has tables that let you know the relative weight, elasticity, strength, etc. of various yarns. She also has a good section on using swatches to help figure out if your non-wool fiber will work out in a particular pattern. Twenty different articles tempt knitters to create sweaters, capes, shawls, caps, scarves, collars, mittens and socks. This book contains loads of really cool garments that will appeal to a wide variety of knitters. Anyone who has an allergy to wool will find this book invaluable! All others will appreciate the wide variety of information about fibers and techniques for knitting with them. Amy Singer has launched an online knitting magazine, Knitty.com. She writes a column for Interweave knits and is the author of two other books about knitting.
Library Journal

Many knitters are allergic to wool. Do these folks have to settle for a boring diet of acrylic yarns? Not if Singer (editor, Knitty online magazine) has anything to say about it. Singer is herself allergic to wool and has spent many years knitting with nonwool fibers. Modern yarn stores stock a varied selection of these nonwool yarns, including acrylic, cotton, bamboo, linen, Ingeo, hemp, lycra, nylon, polyester, rayon, soy, silk, and Tencel yarns. Some of these new materials require adjustments for the knitter, who must consider the yarn's gauge, texture, and weight when adapting designs for wool to other fibers. Singer combines practical information and knitting tips for alternative yarns with 22 excellent projects chosen to highlight the properties of nonwool fibers. Garments include a beautifully muted, striped cotton Fair Isle cardigan, a lace silk shawl, and a silk pullover featuring lace sleeves and a mosaic pattern that stabilizes the slippery silk yarns. A wide range of sizes will make this book appealing to a large library demographic. An excellent choice for all public library knitting collections.

Vogue's® "Knitting on the Go!" series (Sixth & Spring) is great for libraries on a budget. At a cost of about 50 cents per pattern, these little workhorses provide a good selection of knitting and crocheting projects from some of the country's best-known knitwear designers. Two new entries are Bags Twoand Crocheted Baby Blankets(both April 2007, both edited by Trisha Malcolm).

Never be imprisoned by acrylic! Linen, silk, hemp, soy, corn, cotton, and more await you. An excellent breakdown of the different kind of fibers on the market. Very informative and educational on how each fiber functions. Comprehensive explanations for substituting fibers. Plus, the included patterns are very pretty, too.
