This book was a bit of a struggle to read only because I got bored halfway through it. There was some parts that were ok but to be quite honest with you not an author I will be reaading again. I found myself rolling my eyes throughout and then wanting to shake some ssense into the lead female character at one point so not the best but If you're bored go right ahead

Mystic Hollow, Mystic Cafe, and Magick. What a combo! Enjoyed this book and the characters. Did not see the bad guy coming, was totally caught off guard with the twist. Hopefully there will be more to follow this quirky cast of characters. I for one will read more...hope you enjoy them too.

Elly is a girl in a muddle. The first thing that will capture the readers' attention is Elly's ability to make everything seem a bit humorous and real. The characters in this novel feel like people you would walk up to in the street and say hi. The men are caring, diligent, and strong. The women funny, quirky, and crafty. Elly helps out in her grandma's restaurant...and soon she may take over. When one little error occurs, her best friend puts down a dish with a love spell in front of the wrong customer, Elly is under inspection and worrying. Rory, the unfortunate customer, develops an almost comical love for Elly. Elly attempts to right this wrong before it goes to far. This novel is super fast-paced and the reader will truly enjoy it. The novel is light and fun. The characters add depth and help to keep the readers' interest. The plot is imaginative and fun to read about. This novel is terrific for young adults/adults who enjoy romance novels with a touch of magic (no explicit sexual scenes).

She is a fun writer and I love her books. I laugh out loud and I really enjoy the characters. Tom and Rory added quite a bit of fun to this one!! And I loved Grandma in this one. Disclosure: I received a free copy for an honest review.
I started out liking this book - really, really liking it. It was going to be a four-star book at least. I was laughing in all the right places. And, although I thought it was kind of odd that Elly's grandmother would run off and leave her at the café by herself that quickly, I went along with it for the sake of the story. There is such a thing as "suspension of disbelief."
From that almost stellar beginning, though, things went downhill very quickly. The friend - her best friend - who gets so flustered by a handsome guy (who she sees every day, just looks at as a brother, and tries to fix up with Elly) that she gives him another customer's food (which just happens to be doused with a major love potion).
And, of course, Elly and the dreamboat start dating, but when they're on their first date, she tells him, "Tell me about yourself. I don't know anything." And he says he owns a farm - which is fine, except for the fact that they've already talked about his farm - eight pages earlier. They treat it like it's completely new information, but it's not. And the same sort of thing happens in Elly's conversations with Tom, the magic authority. I just don't understand. It seems that the author couldn't remember what she'd written from one day to the next (which, admittedly, does happen), but she didn't go back to read through it? A better editor would have been able to catch that and fix it.
And then there was that intriguing conversation with the weird drunk guy mumbling about "bad people in town" in the middle of the book. Sadly, it never really seemed to go anywhere - unless he was just referring to Rory's ex, Kim, but she wasn't all that bad, and the way he said it made me expect more. ... Or maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. It was a strange bit of "foreshadowing" that, in my opinion, didn't really work.
Okay, and let's not leave out the absolutely ridiculous ending! Who's Elly going to end up with? The dreamboat she's been obsessed with since Day One and with whom she doesn't really have that much in common, or the magic inspector that she flirts with (and kisses) right in front of dreamboat and shares much more of substance? Guess.
There were some great bits toward the end (as there were in the beginning) that made me smile for all the right reasons, but there were many more parts that had me rolling my eyes and screaming at the computer screen (yes, I did say screaming). So did I like this book? I'm not sure. Yes and no, with a little more emphasis on the "No." If I could give this book two and half stars, I would, but I can't, so I'll just round up for the sake of generosity.
Once again, Rose Pressey does it! She keeps me spellbound (pun intended) with her wonderful characters and her witty, engaging writing. I loved the premise of this book and the main character, Elly Blair. She has a gift. She doesn't know it. Luckily her grandmother intervenes and so the story of Elly begins. I could not put this book down and cannot wait to start reading the next installment in this series, "Pies and Potions". Thank you, Rose, for another wonderful book and series. :)

That being said... No shoes, no shirt, no spells is probably my favorite book of her's. The main charecter Elly is such a relateable and down to earth charecter, that you can't help but find yourself slipping into her shoes. I can't wait to read the sequel!!!

This was a fast read that had more fun, mystery, action and romance, not to mention the paranormal aspect of "Magic" all in the same book. I didn't put it down for more than a few minutes at a time. It was just great. I've liked all of her books so far, but this one was the best yet. Congratulations and keep writing, please.

This was a slow paced book that had the potential of being a great fantasy, but it lacked the serious luster of what it could have been. I found it predictable and dry.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Such a fun story! I ate this one right up. Elly is surprised when she learns that she has magical powers and is thrown off guard when her beloved grandmother leaves her the Mystic Cafe and tells her how to use her magic powers to help the regular customers.
Elly is a great character. She's young and wants to make sure she does the right thing. She's heartbroken when she returns to her small hometown but she's ready to take on running the Mystic Cafe. We get to see her grow a little bit. This is the first book in the Mystic Cafe series so I'm sure she'll continue to grow in the following books. This book really sets the scene for the series but unlike many other series, you feel really satisfied at the end of the book. The book would even be a great standalone book but I know that I definitely would love to read more about these characters in future books.
Bottom line: Fun read!

No Shoes, No Shirts, No Spells is a laugh out loud kind of read. It seems that everything that could go wrong for Elly does go wrong. Then when she tries to fix things, she makes even more of a mess, but she keeps trying! Elly has a good heart, but is slightly cheeky as well. Her determination won my heart, as I rooted for her to save the cafe
Rose Pressey, the author, does a great job of writing the humorous situations without going overboard into slapstick. This story is paced well and easy to read. It's lightness is a welcome change to the majority of the paranormal books published today. Give it a read and I think you'll agree.
*Disclaimer: I received this book from the author for review, I was not required to write a positive review.
No Shirt, No Shoes, No Spells is the first in Rose Pressey¿s Mystic Café series, and a pleasingly light-hearted introduction. Think Bewitched, but in Elly¿s café you sprinkle magical spices rather than wrinkling your nose. She¿s a thoroughly modern girl who left her small-town home for the big city. But now, betrayed by big-city and love, she¿s home taking over her grandmother¿s magical café. It might have helped if she¿d known there'd be more than everyday kitchen skills involved in those great recipes. Might even have helped if grandmother hadn¿t immediately upped and left. But Elly's sure she can cope, especially with her best friend helping out.
The author creates an interesting magical world, where officious officials keep track of who knows what and who¿s making what mistakes. Unfortunately Elly and her friend make a really big mistake when a spell goes astray, and now the guy Elly¿s falling for seems only ever to see her while she¿s literally falling. All very sad.
Add threats of closure, financial problems, Elly's conviction she'll never measure up to her perfect grandma, and some handsome gentlemen competing for her heart, and you¿ll get the picture. This is a fun romantic read with nothing to offend (unless you don¿t like magic) and plenty to amuse and entertain. I really enjoyed it, and will look out for more.
