The Writing Prompt

Willy: Now that you have some idea about the grading and structure behind the essay, let's talk about the essay itself. On Part 2 of the Writing TAAS, you will see a prompt — a statement of some sort followed by the question, "What is your position regarding this issue?" Here's a sample.

since they all related to using the farm for learning purposes. I could write a paragraph in my essay that looks something like this.

Dear School Board President,

Instead of using the vacant space next to the school for a park, I would like to suggest an alternate use. There are currently numerous parks throughout the city, and while everyone enjoys green spaces, I believe we could do better here at Eastbury High. That's right: I'm thinking what you're thinking — let's start an organic vegetable farm.

Having an organic vegetable farm would provide a wealth of learning opportunities for our students. Students in botany could get hands-on experience dealing with plants and how they grow, something that I believe most other high school students do not get in their school. Science students could also use the garden to learn more about genetics, as they could combine plants with different traits to see what occurs. Any vegetables grown in the garden could then be eaten by students or — better yet — sold in order to raise funds for various school activities, like field trips and school dances. If you put students in charge of selling the produce, then these students would gain valuable business experience, learning all about the sale and pricing of fruits and vegetables.

Willy: I could go on with this paragraph, but I think you get the point. On the real essay I would definitely continue, because the more related points I can string together, the closer my chances are that I reach full elaboration.
