    Priceless

Have you ever finished a book and thought to yourself "How is it I've never heard of this book before?" That's the question I've been asking myself as I search the internet for the rest of the books in this series.

Brandy Alexander is a small time reporter for an LA station on her way back home to Philadelphia for her high school best friend's wedding. She's avoided going back in the four years she's been away because of a certain cop who broke her heart. But her best friend Franny, the bride, has demanded she come home to be in the wedding, so here she comes.

Trouble seems to find Brandy almost as soon as she sets foot back in the city of brotherly love. She has a kid pee his pants in front of her while waiting to buy food at the airport, is almost run over by a van being piloted by eighty year old nuns, takes a drunken tumble off a stage at the sight of her ex-boyfriend (we won't mention the boob that pops out just prior to this incident), believes her best male friend Johnny has been blown to pieces and manages to get her brother's priceless (to him) car towed. This all within a few days of coming home!!

Troubled by what happened to her friend Johnny, she decides to start investigating the story he had told her the day he picked her up. She figures she owes to Johnny to find out why he was blown up and exactly who's responsible. When she takes the obvious route, the police, she's disheartened that no one seems to believe her story, which leads Brandy to start investigating on her own.

While navigating the trouble thrown in her path (or rather what she places in her path), she also must deal with the unresolved issues between her and Bobby (the cop ex-boyfriend), the hideous bridesmaid dresses Franny has picked out and her suddenly very alert labido when she enlists the very sexy and very mysterious Nick Santiago.

This book was a riot. I was laughing out loud at various parts of the book that had me remembering what is was like to grow up back East in an Italian family. It was priceless.

If you enjoy the Stephanie Plum series, you will devour this book. It's what Stephanie was back in the beginning.

Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

    Reviewed for Midwest Book Review

Brandy Alexander headed for LA after her cop boyfriend dumped her, where she landed a job as (what she considers) a puff-piece reporter for a local TV station. Four years later, she's back in Philadelphia for the wedding of her best friend. Brandy's happy to be back with family and friends, but these warm feelings are short-lived when her good friend Johnny's boat blows up while he's onboard. Brandy suspects this is no accident, since Johnny confided in her that he had evidence related to the recent death of a gay man which he turned over to the police, on top of which, he thought he was being followed. But the cops don't have the evidence, nor does the DA's office. If that isn't bad enough, Bobby DiCarlo, Brandy's ex, seems to be involved in the cover-up. Brandy, determined to find the murderer, plays amateur sleuth which gets her in a world of trouble with her ex and an axe-wielding mystery man who keeps trying to kill her. She joins forces with just-this-side-of-the-law Nicholas Santiago, who's so hot, Brandy sizzles every time she's around him. Bodies pile up and suspects abound but will Brandy survive long enough to reveal the murderer?

If book one in the Brandy Alexander mystery series is any indication of what's to follow, this series is a guaranteed bestseller. Fredman excels at characterization and is adept at pulling the reader into the story so that they will feel as if they're part of the gang, along for the ride. Brandy Alexander is a refreshing character, a girl-next-door type who doesn't seem to realize the impact she has on others. No crazy diets for this girl, she's a sweets-lover through and through and not afraid to prove it. Dialogue is so realistic, readers will think they're in Philly enjoying all the great food and locales. First-person narrative is witty and entertaining, leading to lots of laughter. The chemistry between Brandy and Bobby and Brandy and Nicholas is teasing and fun. The plot is thick with suspects and readers will be challenged to solve the mystery. All in all, an outstanding debut for this entertaining series.

    I Also Recommend:

    Better than Plum

Being a Plum fan, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed Shelly Fredman's writing style even better than Janet Evanovich. Her characters have more depth to them and the plots are better written. Brandy is such a character that I can relate to. She gets herself into so many funny, dangerous, and embarassing situations every time she turns around. I couldn't put this down. And as soon as I was done, I had to order the other 2 books. Still a Plum fan, but had to push Stephanie over to make room for Brandy. You will not be sorry you gave her a try!

    Funny and Believable

No Such Thing as a Secret is terrific. I was looking for a fun, light summer read and this was recommended to me and now I feel compelled to suggest it to everyone looking for the same! Brandy is a great lead character and the book is full of really clever, natural dialogue. The characters actually talked like real people, which is a rare treat in a romantic-comedy mystery.

    Great first book

I just loved this book. It was so fun and the characters were great. I hope Ms. Fredman keeps this series going because once I finished this book I was looking for the next one. Anyone who is a Stephanie Plum fan will become a Brandy Alexander fan. I have loaned my book to friends and they all liked too. Keep up the good work.

I started this book and could not put it down! I stayed up in the middle of the night reading this hilerous, cutsy, mystery that kept me in laughter and amazment. Shelly hits the exact things we are all thinking, she writes about sex, tastycakes, animals its all good! I think her books are like those of a cross between Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton, they offer you so much pleasure I could go on and on!!!!! Kepp them comen Shelly , you rock!!!!!!!!

    Middling

The character, Brandy, is fun but the writing is trite. There is no originality in the book. The vapid prose merely marks the book as trying too hard to fit into an established genre instead of entertaining the reader and does not make me want more.

    Great Book!

I absolutley loved No Such Thing as a Secret. Brandy does so many of the crazy dumb things that we all do, and can laugh about them. I love the triangle between Brandy, Nick, Bobby. I am looking forward to the next Brandy Alexander book!

Review for No Such Thing As A Secret

Shelly Fredman is a former Philadelphian who writes, teaches, elementary school, and loves chocolate, Philadelphia, and an active imagination. She has previously published CREEPS, a young-adult novel, and is presently working on a sequel to NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET. Shelly's motto is that 'Reality is for people who lack imagination.' Her second motto is that chocolate is good for you and you can never eat too much. Brandy Alexander has returned from her puff reporting job in L.A. after a four year absence in Philadelphia. She left behind her love and soulmate, Robert Anthony DiCarlo, who married and had a child in her absence. While she is busy being joyfully reunited with her Phillie friends, her best friend, John, is apparently killed in a boating accident. Brandy witnesses the explosion, and her life changes dramatically. She decides to hunt down the killer, with Bobby (the police officer) challenging her every step of the way. Is Bobby involved in police graft or a coverup? Brandy enlist the aid of sexy Nick Santiago to help her as she enters the underworld of Philadelphia: 'The music pulsated in the background, permeating the air we breathed. Nick stared at me, and I flushed under his gaze. Damn, isn't there some kind of pill you can take for congenital blushing? I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. Wordlessly, he stood and stretched his arm out to me. 'I'm not a very good dancer,' I apologized. 'Neither am I,' he said, as he took me in his arms. Liar.' First off, Shelly Fredman is a hilarious writer! She has such a warm style of writing that the reader can't help but be pulled in as her Phillie friends rejoice in Brandy's return. But make no mistake, this plot is serious and confusing. Brandy Alexander takes the reader on a ride not soon to be forgotten. There is political corruption danger everywhere and Brandy has to transform from a feature reporter to an earnest investigator. But Fredman doesn't stop there. She surrounds Brandy with two luscious men, both vying for her attention. Brandy herself is lovably unaware of their intentions, but ultra-aware of their sexuality. NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET is a titillating mystery full of fun and mayhem. There is a rich under-texture that separates the story from other authors and thus makes it a standout. But beware, Fredman leaves the love interest up in the air, which will guarantee that her readers will be clamoring for the next installment of Brandy Alexander. Cleverly done! Great First Foray

Brandy Alexander is a wonderfully quirky bi-coastal character. Self-effacing, yet determined to push herself to the limits of her capabilities, Brandy's foibles and exploits will warm your heart and fuel your imagination. Great start to what I hope will be a long series of novels.
