Overview

Danny Dragonbreath and his best friend, Wendell, have a carefully constructed trick-or-treating system designed to maximize their Halloween candy haul. But this year, despite Danny's awesome vampire costume, their plan is flopping. First, Danny's dad makes them trick-or-treat with Christiana Vanderpool, an annoying know-it-all (and girl) who doesn't even believe that dragons exist. First, Danny's dad makes them trick-or-treat with Christiana Vanderpool, an annoying know-it-all (and girl) who doesn't even believe that dragons exist. And then the school bully dares them to go into a spooky old haunted house. Naturally, the house is inhabited by a creepy clown and a candy-crazed ghost of yore. It's going to take more than fire-breathing to get them out of this mess - they might even have to (horror of horrors!) perform a sacrificial candy offering.

Perfect for fans of Wimpy Kid, Bad Kitty, and Big Nate, Ursula Vernon's hauntingly hilarious fifth book in the Dragonbreath series will make you check your closets and lock up your candy.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Danny Dragonbreath and his friend Wendell, an iguana, are set to go trick-or-treating. Wendell's costume of a hydrogen atom tempts Danny to give Wendell a pity ghost costume. The reptiles make out pretty well with candy until Danny's dad promises to pick up Chrstiana, an odd school mate. They drive to the neighborhood which has really good candy. All goes well until they run into Big Eddy, the Komodo dragon. Big Eddy dares Danny and his friends to go into an abandoned house. As the three smaller reptiles enter the house, they get stuck inside with only a flashlight to light the way. Danny notices a picture that changes from a clown to flowers and then he begins to hear "hungry." Christiana tries to look at the situation logically and realizes some of the scary things are coming from Big Eddy. However this does not explain the scary clown coming towards them. Danny hopes the stuffed animal that he found can help save them. The scary clown retreats upstairs and the trio can now pacify the ghost with some of their Halloween candy. This hybrid graphic and early chapter book has several things that would appeal to middle school readers: a haunted house, the inexplicable happening, and main characters that are reptiles. The comic book drawings would also appeal to reluctant readers. Unfortunately the story about the ghost is a bit confusing with Danny having some kind of vision and too many asides that refer to earlier books or try to be droll. These asides might work in a video but do not work as well with a printed book. Fans of earlier "Dragonbreath" books can enjoy this Halloween escapade. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

    Good book

A good book with very funny action. My problem is that it is WAY to spooky. The worst part is "Im hungry" The second worst part is that tbe ghost got sicker and DIED. That is the worst part. Definetely!
