NO WAY OUT
Something is wrong with teacher Julia Talbot's favorite second-grader, the mayor's son Brian. Seeing the outgoing little boy become increasingly anxious and withdrawn, she suspects problems at home, inside the mansion of a high-profile political family. But even Julia doesn't know the real truth. Venture capitalist Connor Stratford, the boy's powerful uncle, does.
Intrigued by Julia, Connor plans a campaign of seduction designed to keep her from snooping -- and to get her into his bed. Yet Julia has already learned too much. As danger bears down on her like a runaway freight train, Brian vanishes, and a desperate hunt to find him draws Julia deeper into a family's secrets and an irresistible passion -- and closer to a place where a child's future, and her own fate, hang in the balance.

Chapter One

April 14

Leaf Brook Mall

Westchester County, New York

Wrong place. Wrong time.

She had to get out of here.

Julia gritted her teeth as she fought the crowd surging back and forth through the mall. She shoved her way to the door leading to the twelve-story parking garage. Wall-to-wall people. Everything was called a grand opening. This felt more like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Coming here today had been stupid. The Stratfords were enveloped by spectators, surrounded by members of the press. And the mayor was flanked by his father and brother -- a clear message that the Stratfords represented a unified front. Even Julia's desperation hadn't been enough to get her through. She'd have to find another way.

Taking an elevator wasn't an option. There was already a huge line waiting, and as each car opened, Julia could see they were all filled to capacity. The stairwell wasn't much better, but it was her only choice. She scaled each level as quickly as she could, wincing as the deejay's music rocked the concrete walls and vibrated through her head.

Eventually, the throngs of people began to thin out and the music started to fade as she put more distance between herself and the celebration. She was worried sick and frustrated as hell. If what she suspected was true, then an hourglass was running out. It was up to her to stop the flow of the sand.

She exited the stairwell on the eleventh floor, where she'd wedged her car into the only available parking space -- a space that was far away from the opening-day pandemonium. Reflexively, she groped for her keys as she walked.

The screech of tires was what alerted her.

Her chin came up just as the silver Mercedes blasted around the corner, bearing down on her with lightning speed.

She knew she was its target. She also knew why.

Her hunch had been right. And she was about to be silenced.

A frozen moment of fear paralyzed her. Abruptly, it shattered. A surge of adrenaline jolted through her, and she tried to jump out of the way.
She couldn't make it.

She felt the stunning impact and then a dazed awareness as she was hurled through the air. The concrete floor came rushing up to meet her.

Brian, she thought, shards of pain piercing her skull. Who's going to save Brian?

After reading the reviews and the book insert I was so excited. I ran out to buy this book and boy was I disappoint it when I started to read the book. There was no real surprises from the start of the book to the end of the book. Her other books are better. I would pass on this book or if you must read it borrow it from a friend. Very sweet with no surprises kind of book

In Ms. Kane¿s latest, the suspense just gets better and better as the plot thickens, and there are more sinister characters than previously thought possible.

Mystery and evil are prevalent forces, even in the town of Leaf Brook, New York, a suburb of New York City. Second-grade teacher Julia Talbot is very observant when it comes to children, and she senses a change in Brian Stratford, Mayor Stephen Stratford¿s son. Brian¿s withdrawal could possibly mean that things at home aren¿t as they should be, but Connor Stratford, Brian¿s uncle, refuses to confide in Julia, even as their attraction mounts.

But, when Brian¿s favorite baseball cap goes missing, and his missed schooldays turns into an indefinite school vacation, Julia becomes really concerned. Though she has continued seeing Connor, she becomes heartbroken when she discovers that he may have been using her so that she won¿t pry into the indomitable Stratford family saga.

Using her magic wand of creativity, Ms. Kane carefully combines the undercurrents running throughout this novel. Just how is Stephen¿s gambling problem related to Phillip Walker¿s bid to rent and police the city¿s municipal parking lots? Will Stephen be able to keep alive his hardnosed father¿s dream for him and run for State Senate, at the very least? And will the threats against Stephen¿s family become reality?

Along with the undercurrents is a very classy romance between Connor, the jaded venture capitalist, and Julia, the idealistic elementary school teacher. The attraction is superb, with just the amount of tension to keep the reader¿s interest. One of her best yet, Ms. Kane¿s latest is sure to keep the reader hooked.

In Leaf Brook, New York, second grade teacher Julia Talbot worries about the change in behavior of her favorite student, Brian Stratford. Trained as a child psychologist, Julia easily recognizes the pattern of depression from the little boy who used to ooze life especially that from a fastball and a curveball. The concerned teacher meets with Brian¿s supportive parents, the Mayor and his wife, but they shock her by basically blowing her away.

Brian¿s Uncle Connor realizes that his brother's run for senate is hampered by secrets that will destroy his sibling, but is more anxious about the impact on his beloved nephew. Connor, a successful venture capitalist, leaves Manhattan to help Brian cope and to deter Julia from interfering with his family. However, love blossoms between Connor and Julia, but the different ways they try to assist Brian leaves a permanent relationship seem impossible. Worse yet the youngster is now missing.

Andrea Kane is known for her strong suspense tales (historical and recently contemporary) and her current novel, NO WAY OUT, attains the quality expected by her fans. The story line is cleverly devised because the characters including the potential villains (several are possible as normally found in a mystery rather than romantic suspense) come across as genuine individuals. The squabbling lead couple provides the love and romance, but what makes this modern day tale so outstanding is the secondary cast who plays key roles propelling the plot to its superb climax.

On a whole, the writing is very amateurish and silly; surprising for such a well-read author. I skip-read the last 1/3 just to get it over with. But my biggest problem was the main character. She is a teacher obsessed with one of her 7-year-old students and his family. I kept expecting her to end up being the villain and snatching the little boy. The auther painted her as the heroine; a dedicated, caring teacher. If she were my son's teacher, I'd report her to the authorities as a possible stalker.
