Richard Rogers, part-time stand-up comic, is a married and faithful man. He wakes up one day in his own house to find it occupied by others. Turns out that he is now essentially nonexistent when people are in sight of him. So he becomes an odd kind of superhero: Nobody. This cute, dark novel is imbued, even infested, with a graphic-novel (read, "comic book") sensibility. Dr. Know enlists Nobody (with the aid of his two rivalrous superheroine daughters) in his ongoing struggle with archvillain Rex Monday. This is loony stuff, but it's also a good deal of fun. The leaps of faith and the suspensions of disbelief are well supported by the careful, even cunning prose. Eight or 10 times a chapter, I was forced into a double-take, when a sentence or a paragraph starts out with "Nobody saw the ... " or "Nobody knew ... " It's a slick device, and it does add to the giggle factor in this well-painted, cartoonish book. Not that I want to, or even could, spoil the plot, but Nobody gets the girl. — Jim Hopper

    A Wild, Wonderful Ride

    If you love to read, buy this book. If you love science fiction, buy this book. If you love comics, buy this book. Nobody Gets the Girl is a daring, innovative, exhilerating ride. This is the book you've been hungry for, the kind you can't put down even if it's 2 in the morning and tomorrow you have the most important business meeting of your life. Nobody Gets the Girl grabs you by the lapels and whisks you away on a fabulous, unforgettable journey. There's been a great deal of talk lately about the way James Maxey has skillfully blended the genres of science fiction and comic books. Believe the hype, fellow readers. James Maxey has captured the joy, the momentum, the grandeur of the most exciting comic book between the covers of Nobody Gets the Girl. I used to think that the comic book was a singular medium, that there were certain things a comic can do that you won't find anywhere else--city- wide battles, colorful splash pages, heroes in flight high above the Earth, sexy costumes, etc. Yet James Maxey has proven me wrong. It's all here, folks. It's all here, and more. Nobody Gets the Girl isn't just a prose comic book, it's also an inventive science fiction novel, a romance, a character study, and the most original use of quantum physics I've ever come across. Nobody Gets the Girl also has the best characters I've seen in ages. How can you go wrong with names like Panic, Pit Geek, The Thrill, Rail Blade, and Nobody? Every author enters into a pact with the reader. The author is saying, 'If you read this you will be entertained, informed, delighted.' Too many writers fail to uphold their end of this deal. Well, James Maxey delivers. So buckle up and take a few deep breaths. This is one wild, wonderful ride.

    Wow.

    I liked this book a lot. It is immensely entertaining and still quite thought-provoking. My only complaint is that it's a bit short...I read it easily in one evening. James Maxey combines wonderful comic-book style with terribly real plot twists. Nobody is the kind of superhero I'd want to be.
