Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A superlative work....Highly enjoyable."—Edmonton Journal
"Stewart's genius is his ability to give the ordinary, personal events of his characters the same dramatic weight as their epic clashes."—Horizons SF
Judging solely by the cover, Nobody's Son would appear to be an adventure story. It depicts a young man dressed in medieval garb, holding a sword, with a castle in the background. Readers with those expectations will not be disappointed—they will be engaged by the tale, which has definite Arthurian and even Wasteland elements inherent in it. However, to call Nobody's Son a medieval adventure story, or a work of historical fiction, would be just skimming the surface. This title also concerns the romantic adventures and misfires of two couples—Shielder's Mark and Gail, and Valerian and Lissa. Shielder's Mark has always sought greatness and yearns to prove himself worthy. Through a series of events, this commoner becomes a hero, and as his reward he is allowed to choose any of King Astin's treasures. He chooses his youngest daughter Gail. That's where the adventures begin—he must prove himself all over again, to the people, to Gail, and to himself. Author Stewart has created a world of crones, magical spells, and political intrigues, and populated this world with engaging and complex characters, especially Shielder's Mark. Gail is not your typical pampered princess. She possesses an independent spirit and welcomes adventure. Lissa, her lady-in-waiting, is shrewd, practical, and loyal to Gail above all else. Valerian, the fourth part of this equation, is Mark's friend. He is brainy, yet not quite socially adept. Part of the humor in this book arises from the difficulty that the two men have in understanding the female psyche, and the results of their misinterpretations, a theme familiar to readers everywhere. Some minor words of caution: the dialectical language employedhere as well as the length and pace of the story may put off reluctant readers. The author also employs strong language and mature situations in telling his story. Even so, for those readers who enjoy a good fantasy tale, this one will be a treat. Winner of the Aurora Award, a Canadian prize given to the best fantasy novel of the year, as well as the Canadian Library Association's Best Young Adult Novel of the Year. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 1995, Harcourt, 273p, 18cm, 99-54324, $6.00. Ages 16 to adult. Mark has always tried to seek his greatness in the Ghostwood. Abandoned by his father when he was just a boy and left an orphan when his mother died in his twenty-first year, Mark leaves his home and sets out bravely for the haunted Forest. The language and devices of fairy tales blend to make this tale of Mark's growth from a young man to hero come alive throughout his quest for manhood. After breaking a curse that has troubled the kingdom for years, the peasant Mark is allowed to marry the King's daughter. This marriage allows him to step into another world where he must make peace with the demons of his childhood. Mark seeks to become a good husband and father in this award-winning young adult novel in which "happily ever after" has many different meanings. 2000 (orig. 1995), Magic Carpet Books, Ages 12 up, $6.00. Wonderful! Truly creative!

I wonder after an adventure tale, what happened o this character after the event? This story tells what that is. And with this character I can truly relate to the insecurity he has when breaking that old curse and confronting the king, truly funny, four stars!
