If you haven't followed Victor Krummenacher's solo career and come to Nocturne expecting a Camper Van Beethoven reprise, you're in for a surprise. Krummenacher's songs are moody and introspective and very well-written, and have a somber quality even when the band is rocking out. Pedal-steel guitar flavors many of the tunes without sounding excessively "country", supplied by Krummenacher's secret weapon, Bruce Kaphan, who engineered and mixed the album while playing a myriad of instruments and sharing production duties.
