Pop-classical sensation Josh Groban gets the Christmas spirit on his fourth studio album, Noel, a superbly produced, holiday-themed showcase for the 26-year-old's smooth singing. Veering between pop-oriented and lush classical arrangements, the album delivers a delightful variety of approaches to Yultetide favorites. "Silent Night" kicks off the set in classic style, assisted by the boys' choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, with majestic accompaniment from the London Symphony Orchestra. Next up, "Little Drummer Boy" gets a contrasting rhythm-driven treatment, with guitarist Andy McKee supporting Groban's rich vocals. Further pop-styled tracks feature duets with Brian McKnight ("Angels We Have Heard on High") and Faith Hill ("The First Noel," with the added boost of a gospel choir), while "I'll Be Home for Christmas" mixes in touching messages home from soldiers serving overseas -- a device that risks sounding maudlin but instead tugs genuinely on the heart strings. Wrapping things up in a neat bow, Groban channels his inner Andrea Bocelli on "Panis Angelicus" -- perhaps his most operatic-sounding track ever -- and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir helps to send it thrillingly over the top on the album closer "O Come All Ye Faithful." Produced by hitmaker David Foster, with expert arrangements from Bill Ross and others, Groban's first collection of seasonal songs is sure to be a Yuletide smash.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Vocalist Josh Groban delivers his first Christmas themed album with 2007's Noel. Once again produced by longtime "man behind the curtain" David Foster, the album features more of Groban's dewy, supple vocals set to Foster's cinematic orchestrations. As per the holiday theme, these are primarily classic tunes of the season including such chestnuts as "Silent Night," "Ave Maria," and, of course, "The Christmas Song." However, also included are a few lesser-known traditional songs as "Panis Angelicus" and "Angels We Have Heard on High." Similarly, while most of the productions here should appeal to longtime fans of Groban's particular classical-crossover sound, some cuts like soft rock inflected "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and the Celtic folk leaning "Little Drummer Boy" do expand upon the Groban/Foster palette in a pleasing way. Notably, also showcased here are guest appearances by country superstar Faith Hill, R&B stalwart Brian McKnight, and perennial holiday backing band the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Toronto Star - John Terauds
1/2 Groban is in excellent form.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Rosa Colucci
The disc is masterfully produced with crystal-clear arrangements and beautiful singing.... A worthy addition to your holiday collection.

One thing that would have made this CD perfect...O Holy Night. Joshs' rendition of O Holy Night is only second best to Pavarotti :o"

As my mom lay comatose for the final night of her life, I held her hand through the wee hours of the night, praying, crying and listening to this beautiful CD. The following morning, 30+ family members crowded into her ICU room and tearfully listened to the words to Thankful, reminding us of all Mom/Grandma gave to each of us, before having her breathing tube removed. No song, no voice, will ever mean as much to each of us as this beautiful song, sung so purely and with such heart, as Josh Groban. I'm so thankful he has chosen to share the gifts of his talented voice and rich emotions with all the world.

unbelieveably beautiful and touching. My son is leaving for Qatar in November and I was truly touch with, I'll be Home for Christmas". I will, from now on, always connect this song with Nicholas's leaving....thanks, Josh

I bought the CD at the Greensburg Barnes and Noble a couple of days ago and cannot begin to say how impressed I am with it. Groban has an outstanding singing voice. I have heard one of his songs on the Polar Express soundtrack and his "raise me up" cannot compare.

I am so excited and happy... I just listened to the clips, and I feel like I'm in heaven. Josh Groban truly has the best voice in the world - the voice of an angel and when paired with Christmas music proves an overwhelming combination.... Thank-you so much Josh!

I've always enjoyed Josh Groban, and have wished ever since I first heard him that he would come out with a Christmas album. This one didn't disappoint me! It was worth waiting for! My favorite songs on "Noel" were "Angels We Have Heard On High" (the duet with Brian McKnight - who did an AWESOME job, by the way - ...gave me chills), and "I'll Be Home For Christmas" (made me cry...the audio clips of the soldiers' messages were a great idea!). The rest of the songs were amazing, so it was hard to pick favorites! Hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did!

This was the only Christmas Music that was played in my home this year. Absolutely wonderful. Josh Groban's versions of the traditional Christmas songs is brilliant.

CAN'T WAIT!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!! JOSH RULES!!! Now that I am done ranting, I must say that this CD sounds like an outstanding piece of work that Josh should be very proud of.

Obviously Todd needs to get over his dislike for Josh Groban, If you don't like his music then don't buy this CD. I used this CD as background music for tree trimming and house decorating and has so far been one of the few things that have made it feel like Christmas. This CD focuses on what Christmas is truly about with an amazing redition of Noel and Ave Maria. His version of I'll be Home for Christmas had me crying-- and for anyone whose had service men or women oversees make sure you have a hanky handy. Made me think of my brother and another war 16 years ago this Christmas while he was gone.

I've been a Josh Groban fan since I saw him on the first Ally McBeal, but I wasn't one who was begging him to do a Christmas CD. I've never cared much for Christmas music and preferred to listen to Josh's own creations. BUT, when I checked out this CD just to see how he was doing I was stunned! It is too beautiful for words to describe, and I don't even LIKE Christmas music! He's taken songs I got sick of as a pre-teen and made them new and fresh and enjoyable again. And anyone that wonders what a Heavenly Host in glorious song would sound like just needs to listen to one of the classical numbers on this CD - Ave Maria, Angels We Have Heard on High, O Come All Ye Faithful are about as close to a choir of angels in full song as you can get on this earth. Josh and Company have created a treasure of the most beautiful sounds, holiday or otherwise, and everyone that loves good music should give this one a listen. There isn't a song on this CD that isn't beautiful in some way. Don't pass it up!

Josh Groban has the most hauntingly beautiful voice in contemporary music. Hearing him sing "Little Drummer Boy" gave me chills. His incredible interpretation of these holiday classics is sure to appeal to young and old alike. If you only buy one CD this Christmas, make it this one. You won't be disappointed.
