Nature enthusiast Himmelman's latest picture book issues to young readers the invitation to come sing along with the often-unnoticed musicians of the insect world. Field crickets singing, tree crickets ringing, mole crickets calling, click beetles clicking, tiger moths squeaking, dog-day cicadas and bumble bees buzzing, mosquitos humming, true katydids calling, and grasshoppers snapping their wings—all are part of the chorus of insect sound in the world around us. While the realistic style of the illustrations, resembling photographs, is academically accurate rather than aesthetically appealing, the text ably catalogs a careful inventory of insect sound effects, building to a glorious closing cacophony. Additional features include a visual rendering of the sound waves for each insect, further information about each "noisy bug" presented, and helpful instructions for how to train yourself to be a better listener to insect song (e.g., how to turn your human ears into "bat ears" by cupping your hands behind them to amplify the sounds of the singing insects all around us). The illustrations are a feast for bug lovers' eyes, but the text could be so much more. The opening page tells readers that bugs sing day and night, loudly and softly, and that they should sing along. Turn the page, and the bugs get up-close and personal, the detail wowing readers, though they are a simplified version of lifelike. Each double-page spread is devoted to one insect and its sound, a sentence telling the name of the creature and what it does, followed by the sound the bug makes--in a huge display type that spreads across and fills the pages. "Field Crickets sing from beneath leaves. CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP." Mole crickets call "dirt-dirt-dirt," while a tiger moth emits a high-pitched "SQUEAKA." Not all the sounds are particularly identifiable, however: The bumblebee and cicada have the same sound--zzzzzz--and saying that tree crickets "ring like a telephone" is not helpful for modern children used to an infinite variety of ring tones. The most serious flaw of the text, however, is its failure to provide a why or how for the bugs' sounds. While this is provided in the backmatter, along with information about and visualizations of sound waves, many children may not sit through all this text presented in one chunk.     Dogs bark and cows moo, but what kinds of sounds do insects make? Well, field crickets sing from beneath leaves, “Chirp Chirp Chirp.” Most of us have probably heard them at one time or another. Author and illustrator John Himmelman describes the sorts of sounds made by twelve different insects, including three types of crickets, click beetles, cicadas, bumblebees, mosquitoes, true and bush katydids, and grasshoppers. I didn’t know that tiger moths can make very high squeaks to warn bats away. Did you? We can’t hear them, but the bats can. And do butterflies make any sound?

    When Himmelman was eight, he started his first “bug club” in a friend’s garage and has been playing with insects ever since. He is the author and illustrator of over 75 books for children. Noisy Bug Sing-Along encourages children to know that there’s a lot going on out there and to open their ears to the wonderful concert happening every warm day and night in our nearby yards, fields, and woods. The sing-song text tells kids who is making what sound and why, while the illustrations give scientifically accurate and up-close depictions of the bugs. There is additional information in the back of the book about the different bugs, their sound waves, and how to listen for them.
