Library Journal - Library Journal
This volume is one of Gale's new one-stop sources for statistical information by industry (e.g., By the Numbers: Publishing, LJ 6/15/98). The data come from a wide variety of sources such as annual reports, online sources, magazines, newspapers, and trade publications. The volume under review has 570 tables, with the most space given to foundation assets, giving, and grants by state. Other examples of tables range from largest anonymous contributors to Peace Corps volunteers by country. While the information is interesting and well sourced, the value here is for background rather than for grant writing or development. Most library users will be looking for the lists of grants found in Bowker's Annual Register of Grant Support or the Foundation Grants Index (Foundation Ctr., annual). Reasonably priced and well indexed (the index takes up roughly 60 pages), this is an acceptable supplementary purchase for a grants collection.--Patrick J. Brunet, Western Wisconsin Technical Coll. Lib., La Crosse
