Overview

Dawn Dais hated running. And it didn't like her much, either. Her fitness routine consisted of avoiding the stairs in her own house, because who really has the energy to climb stairs? It was with this exercise philosophy firmly in place that she set off to complete a marathon.

The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women is a fun training manual for women who don't believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. Revised in 2013, it now includes a new chapter on using technology as a training aid.

Dais’s book features a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to's, quizzes, and funny observations, which she felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted. She also integrates entries from her journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and—most important of all—the amazing rewards.

Anyone can do a marathon. This book just makes the experience a little more bearable and a lot more fun.

    Outstanding and informative

I am a new runner and was thinking about running a half marathon. I was interested in a book that came from a "non-athletes" point of view. This book was exactly what I was looking for with all kinds of added bonus'.

Dawn was funny, informative, candid, entertaining and thought provoking. I learned an incredible amount about running from her and have already incorporated alot of her tips into my running.

This is a must read for any new runner that is interested at all in the idea of running a marathon or half marathon.

    Enjoyed every minutes of it!!

    LOVED IT!!!

I am in my 40's and have always been a walker but NEVER a runner. This year I signed up for a marathon with a friend.DONT ASK WHY?? Bought this book and have laughed so hard that I woke the guy up next to me on the plane. Dawn Dais is hysterical in her depiction of thought process of us non-runners as we look at a marathon. It has a lot of good and accurate info but doesnt take the process too seriously! She definitely is a crutch to turn to when you are aching!I would Highly recommend this book as a gift or for yourself no matter what step you are at in the marathon process! I have even given copies to our TNT coaches so they can empathize with us from her perspective. I am 6 weeks in to training and will croos the finish line in May just like she did.

    Sarcastic and Honest

I went to B&N last week while contemplating whether or not I was going to run the Honolulu Marathon in December. I went over to the running section to just check out what kinds of books they had and I ran across Dawn Dias' book and instantly fell in love! She writes about marathoning in such an honest and sarcastic way that I think even people who aren't crazy enough to consider running a marathon would enjoy reading this book...I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a window into the marathoning world or if you're just looking for a good laugh!

    Excellent funny read!

I bought this book on a recommendation from another beginner runner (like myself). It was so great! I loved the writers sense of humor. Much like my own... probably because she was in so much pain all the time. lol This is a GREAT book for a beginner. Too many books are written from an experts experience. This book is great for someone who has no experience and just wants to read about someone else's trials and trails. I was sad when the book had ended :(

    Got me off the couch!!!

Loved the book. The information is easy to understand and the sarcasm Dias using relates to couch potatoes. I finished reading the book and am now training for a 1/2 marathon. I reread some of the parts of the books to remind me that at least one other person has been in the same place of pain, quitting but keep moving, and experiences.

    Funny and motivating!

I read this years ago after i did my first triathalon with Team in Training. I could relate and felt like Dawn in many regards. This is a great book if you need a push to say "anybody CAN do this!".

    HILARIOUS!

The reviews I read before purchasing this book gave me an expectation of this gut-busting, super funny book, that at first, I was waiting for. The more I read, the more I laughed, and laughed, and laughed. This is a very funny book, and I'm so glad I read it. It doesn't give too much of the technical knowledge I was also expecting, but it's definitely a good read. Anyone attempting to run right now who needs a light-hearted, humorous approach to what they're doing should DEFINITELY read this book!

    Loved it!

The way she wrote the book was amazing. This book is not for the person who runs all the time, it's for people like me who one day randomly decided running a marathon might be something I want to do. I would recommend this book to everyone!

I rarely rate a book 5 stars, but this one is brilliant.  I would only change one thing about.  I would call it : THE NON-RUNNER'S RUNNING GUIDE FOR WOMEN.  Because even if you are training for just a 5K, if you are a non-runner/couch potato female training for any running event, this book is applicable to YOU!  You will be able to totally relate to the author's experiences.  She will be your new best sarcastic running buddy!  You'll realize you're not alone in your aches, pains, complaints and general whining when it comes to waking up early and pounding the pavement to basically go nowhere.  Yet she ties it all up with a philosophy that will make sense.  And she gives you the straight scoop on the less glamorous side of running.  Very helpful for tips and especially motivation!  A must read for any female training to run!

What an inspiring book! Dawn's sense of humor is so motivating. This is the best book on running I have ever read. I laughed out loud!

This book was so entertaining and full of very useful information. I registered for my first marathon after reading the book. She makes you feel as though you are running with her through the months.

A must read for all those non runner's that have marathon goals.

I loved Dawn's sarcastic humor about running. It kept me laughing the whole time and made me realize that my goals of running a marathon ARE attainable. I couldn't have asked for a better book to get me 'off my butt and on with my training'.

Dawn lets us know that you don't have to be an athlete to accomplish a goal. She says what we are all thinking and lets us know we are not alone. This is a great book even if you do not run a marathon. I am not able to run due to bad knees but will walk. I can do it! Thanks Dawn
