Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Noodle has been featured in several board books and he is back again in this title. There are textures to feel and tabs to lift in this brief trip to the zoo, Noodle sees a zebra and the striped fabric which little ones can run their fingers over replicates the stripes on a real zebra. In his next encounter, Noodle meets a brown bear but the simulated fur feels a bit too much like ultra-suede and not the hairy texture one might expect. Noodle finds the monkeys hiding in a tree and a giraffe behind the door of its home in the zoo. The final page features lions and a Mylar mirror and asks kids to roar like a lion. The lessons imparted include the naming of objects and animals as well as learning the sounds that some of the animals make. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews
Noodle the panda takes an excursion to the zoo with his dad. As with other titles in the series, tactile elements are embedded into each double-page spread. A zebra and a bear both sport velvety coats, and a tree has felt leaves that can be pulled down to reveal a couple of monkeys. On the giraffe spread, the touch-and-feel element is a corrugated door to the giraffe house, and action-oriented youngsters may be disappointed it does not open. As in the other Noodle books, the final gimmick is a Mylar mirror that allows readers to put themselves in the story and here acts as a pond for the lions. The simple rhyming text follows the same pattern as other Noodle stories but does not scan quite as well. Older readers may find it odd that these pandas are visitors to a zoo rather than residents, but young Noodle fans will be happy to see their hero in a new locale. (Board book. 1-3)
