Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
Nora has been in bed with a cold for a week and even Teddy the bear, Maggie the doll and Kiki the dog cannot keep her from feeling very bored and restless. Luckily, she notices the blooming rose bush outside her window and is entertained first by a variety of people and animals that stop and pick roses, and then by a vivid dream of dancing roses. Delicate, watercolor illustrations add to the appeal of this gentle picture book. 1997 (orig.

K-Gr 2-- While sick in bed, Nora also suffers from a bad case of boredom. She watches with interest the pedestrians who stop to smell, and ultimately pick, the lovely roses that grow outside her window. Saddened by her own lack of mobility, the child drops off to sleep and dreams that the roses invite her to a party. She romps with the fairylike blossoms until she's awakened by a cow consuming the last of them. With only one bloom left, Nora decides that the only way to preserve the rose is to draw a picture of it. The story has a gentle sweetness enhanced by exquisite watercolor illustrations. The delicate flowers glow with translucent color, while Nora and her toy companions exude personality and charm. While perfect for one-on-one sharing with a sick child, all children will be able to identify with the tedium of ``sick days'' and budding young artists will appreciate, and perhaps imitate, Nora's creative solution. --Lori A.
