Beginning with the late Middle Ages and early Modern period, this massive resource completes the history begun with v.1, which was published by Walter de Gruyter in 2002. Each of the nine chapters contains detailed articles on specific topics by a specialist in the field, with introductory articles to each chronological period describing the era's history and sociocultural developments. Though rigorous in terms of content, the 230 articles, which are often contextual and interdisciplinary in their approach, were edited into language that will be accessible to an interested public as well as scholars in other fields. The 82 articles of the initial sections are devoted to the developments in the Nordic languages from the mid-14th century through the 20th century, with individual articles on each of the languages and issues that include influence, language contact, stylistic developments, conversational culture, and the development of lexicons, personal names, and place names, among other topics. The remaining articles delve into special topics dealing with typology, social stratification, special languages, language cultivation and planning, and language contact.
