School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-10This easy-to-read biography traces the painter's life and work. While recognizing Rockwell as a fine artist, Durrett concedes that some critics have labeled him the "Lawrence Welk of art" or a "folk artist." The presentation is strengthened by an abundance of quotations, many by Rockwell himself, which reveal how various covers for the Saturday Evening Post and other notable works were created. Six pages chronicle the story of the Four Freedoms, from Franklin Roosevelt's historic speech to Rockwell's classic rendering. Black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout; some are too dark or too small to show detail. Unfortunately, pictures of many of the paintings discussed in the text are not includedPat Katka, formerly at San Diego Public Library
