Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-These broad narratives cover the painters' early years through their deaths, offering personal quotes as well as comments on how their work was received. Readers of de Kooning will learn how the artist began painting and some of his techniques and work habits. In addition, Hawes addresses her subject's lifestyle and drinking, focusing on their effects on his art, health, and relationships. Black-and-white photos of the artist and color reproductions of his work are included. Rockwell emphasizes the man's early desire to draw and the enduring affection held by the American public for his work. Background information on the artist's choice of topics and models is also related. This slim volume includes full-color reproductions of Rockwell's art and average-quality, black-and-white photos of the painter. While these introductions are useful, students may wish to see additional, larger format sources to better understand the detail and impact of each man's work.-Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
