Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
In his introduction to this latest edition of a work first published under this title in 1982, editor Barrett asserts that the intention here is to be as comprehensive as possible. With that goal in mind, this directory of more than 4,000 horticultural organizations and programs in the U.S. and Canada covers everything from native plant societies to community gardens Each chapter covers a different subject, beginning with national organizations and proceeding to more specific topics such as listings of horticultural and botanical libraries and organizations dealing with horticultural therapy. There is even a list of cemeteries with notable gardens. The section that covers U.S. and Canadian governmental programs relating to horticulture lists not only federal offices, but also governmental and university-sponsored programs in each state and province The state-by-state breakdown in some of the chapters is intended to include more local information than the previous edition. There is now a whole chapter on state and local horticultural groups. New to this edition are sections on native plant societies and botanical clubs and a brief chapter titled "Historical Horticulture and Museum Gardens" that lists historic and estate gardens, living historical farms and museums, historic landscape preservation societies, and other groups involved in the preservation or interpretation of the horticultural heritage of North America. For example, the Flower and Herb Exchange of Decorah, Iowa, is an organization dedicated to the preservation and exchange of heirloom herbs and flowers Comprehensive indexes by organizational name and by state will help guide users to the appropriate page. Adequate cross-references occur within the text. A few black-and-white photographs of gardens add interest For academic and public libraries with strong collections and/or programs in horticulture.
