Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
The world's most isolated and secretive nation, North Korea is perhaps the key to stability in Asia today. This book effectively makes the politics and history of this aggressive communist country more accessible to today's upper elementary and middle school reader. Targeted at those at or above the fourth grade, this visually attractive book helps explain the history behind this inaccessible nation in a news-like format, using short paragraphs, maps, and numerous sidebars. The book traces North Korea's troubled modern history from the post-World War II division of Korea at the 38th parallel to the creation of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) following the Korean War of the early 1950s. The book does a good job of covering what is known of this completely closed, dictatorial society. Famines and floods have conspired to put North Korea's people in a state of extreme poverty. Meanwhile, its government focuses on developing nuclear and other weapons that put its neighboring countries as well as leading world nations on high alert. Part of a twelve-title "Global Hot Spots" series, this nonfiction book includes a glossary, index, and fact page summarizing North Korea's geography, demographics, and economy. Balanced in its approach, including quotes from a variety of sources, this would be a great resource for any social studies, current events, or history unit. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
