Overview

Something Corporate had the misfortune of being dubbed an emo band throughout their career, a classification that overlooked the group's pop
ock muscle and Andrew McMahon's strong songwriting. While Leaving Through the Back Window introduced McMahon as a younger generation's Ben Folds (albeit with more angst and less snarky humor), North saw the songwriter taking an introspective turn, shunning the drunk high school girls and classroom bullies of his previous album for thoughtful ruminations on love, celebrity, and the steady approach of adulthood. North's strongest rock songs -- "Space," "Only Ashes," "Break Myself," and "The Runaway" -- feature minor-key guitar riffs and anxious vocals, indicating that the band's sunny disposition also had a dark side, but the album's true highlights are the slower numbers. "As You Sleep" opens the disc with midtempo piano arpeggios, and the striking title track mixes sparse, atmospheric verses with a meteoric chorus. There's some filler here, of course -- probably more than the band's debut, which only seemed to lose steam toward the end of its 14-song track list -- but North still proved that Something Corporate had the maturity to move past the majority of their Warped Tour brethren. Unfortunately, rhythm guitarist William Tell quit during the album's supporting tour, and Something Corporate took an extended (perhaps permanent) break several months later. Andrew McMahon went on to form Jack's Mannequin, a band that sampled equally from Something Corporate's sunny, pop-based beginnings and the mature, often melancholic introspection of this sophomore effort.

Something Corporate is a great Piano Rock band with incredible lyrics and incredible vocals. There first album "Leaving through the Window" has a more "rock" feeling to it and has bratty songs like "If you see Jordan" and yet soft songs like "Cavanaugh Park". But "North" is different. It is more mature and has a darker feeling. The songs are less rock and are more piano orientated. If you are a Something Corporate fan this album delievers the goods. But if you a first timer... I would recommend "Leaving through the Window". Whether you choose "North" or "Leaving Through The Window" you won't be disappointed.

this is a GREAT KICK A** album!!! it was cheap and i had heard some of their other songs so i bought it on impulse at target... lemme tell you, it was the best $9 i spent ever! Something Corporate has definitely matured and grown as a band... they sound like it and they play like it... the music is way better than their previous stuff... Andrew McMahon is a genius! EVERY track is a standout track although some favorites include: As You Sleep, Only Ashes, Ruthless, Me and the Moon, I Won't Make You, and of course Space.. GET IT... you won't be disappointed!

Something Corporate’s new album North picks up where their full-length debut Leaving Through the Window left. The band hasn’t changed much, but they have matured and it shows through. The songs are amazingly well crafted, combining catchy melodies and aggressive hooks with a piano. And it all works because singer Andrew McMahon is an accomplished songwriter. ‘The Runaway’ starts off quiet and surprises you with one of the catchiest choruses on the album. The mix of high-energy (the single “Space” is pure energetic pop-rock) and mellow songs (the charming “She Paints Me Blue”) gives North some welcome variety. The production on the album pulls it all together; it’s glossy and polished without overdoing it or seeming forced. One of the best songs is the closer, “Miss America”. It’s a sentimental song, without being too sappy and the quiet vocals work perfectly over the swelling beat.

Omggg, the lead singer has such a good voice! Every single song is good, it's one of those few CD's where you can just listen to it without skipping any songs. The best are "Down", "Only Ashes", "She Paints me Blue" and "Break Myself.

I've always loved Something Corporate. Everything from the absolutely fantastic piano sounds to the meaningful lyrics all amaze me. They just keep getting better. They've only been around for three years, but they just have so many amazing songs. I would most definately reccommend this album to anyone!

Not only is this album more mature and thus stylistically an improvement over "Leaving through the Window" but one gets a better feel for what the band really wants to sound like. Not every album of a band will be the same, duh! I am very impressed with "North" and find it just as rock and sensual as their previous work. Kudos to Andrew and Josh for giving me something I truly enjoy listening to.

definately a favorite of mine. so worth checking out. let's see. 'only ashes,' 'ruthless,' and 'down' are probably the greatest tracks on the c.d. but the rest are incredible as well. soco really hit it big this time.

Something Corporate’s new album “North”, does anything but go in the wrong direction, picking up where their last album “Leaving…” left off. With a much more mature sound to both the melodies and the lyrics, this sophomore album is turning Something Corporate into the band that they have worked so hard to become. Although some may say the album has a more relaxed sound for a rock group, I don’t feel this band can be placed in a genre due to their versatility. From “She Paints Me Blue”’s rapid drum beats off set by Andrew’s piano playing, to “Only Ashes” harder/more guitar-based feel and then to the catchy chorus from “Space”, this album is far from unoriginal. If you are looking for an album to listen to straight-through, and a refreshing band with talent and originality, then “North” is definitely worth your while to check out.

After a hard act to follow with “Leaving through the Window”, Something Corporate has managed to do what many artists are unable to achieve with their sophomore album…that is they have produced something even better with more maturity and creativity than the first. “North” has proven itself to be a turning point in this band’s career, leading them in nothing but a positive direction. The melodic tracks and intense lyrics truly define this album as an artist’s album, and it is apparent through the emotion and feelings that are expressed in songs like “Me and the Moon” and “Only Ashes”. North is undoubtedly a must have in any CD collection, as it is a refreshing dose of genuine talent and quality music.

I¡¦ve found that this is a great CD to listen to during those morning drives to work, or for those drives home after dancing all night at a club. It¡¦s melodious and calming to the ears. I really like it! Compared to their first CD, this one is more ballad ROCK than POP. I mean, for the most part, every song has a piano introduction and the entrance of Andrew¡¦s soothing voice. That means, though, that there are no songs like ¡§Punk Rock Princess¡¨ or ¡§U C Jordan.¡¨ ƒ¼ But, every group matures and grows. All the songs, on this CD, are still really catchy. My favorite song on this CD is ¡§21 and Invincible.¡¨ (I think the title is self-explanatory.) Truly, though, I love this new CD because it is the perfect slow CD, but it still has louder catchier choruses. Since I¡¦m not much of a slow-song individual, this CD is great for me!

Have you ever noticed that with some music you have to be in a certain mood to listen to? Well this isn't the case with Something Corporate's North CD. Fit for any time, I find myself putting it in whether I'm happy, sad, tired, or awake. The music is driven by emotions that are heard through singer Andrew's voice. The mix between piano and guitar definately sets the mood. Unlike their last album, the music isn't all about girls and lost love. They add other elements of growing up, including an accurate portrayal of inside a 21-year-old boy's head. I recomend this CD to anyone who enjoys emo/rock music.

I am a big fan of the indie rock scene, adn something corporate has been a huge fave of mine for sometimes. Their albums are such a great breath of fresh air from the packaged groups that the record companeis keep on turnin gout in hopes of making a quick buck. I actually got a chance to see them live when they came to SEattle on April 2nd, adn the show was great. Stereogram and YEllowcard also performed, and I suggest you guys check these bands out too if you liked this CD. Don't miss the chance to see them live if they come to your town.

This CD is so amazing, from the first song to the last. Something Corporate is my favorite band, and this album makes me love the even more. This album is a bit more mature and grown up than Leaving Through the Window, and some of the songs are much more serious. This just makes the album even better. Some of the highlights of this CD are Only Ashes, Down, and The Runaway. This is a great buy. =]

Nothing is better than listening to the way Andrew Mcmahon's voice flows with his piano playing. There is not one song I don't like on this cd. Simply amazing.
