Overview

Choro is a uniquely Brazilian style, popular there in the 1930s, but now, in many ways, lost to history as musical trends march on. There's a strong resemblance to American jazz, although choro is more demanding with melody and asks for more detail in its solos. For several years the New York-based Choro Ensemble has been playing weekly gigs in the Big Apple, honing and perfecting its sound, and Nosso Tempo is the result. The mix of classic tunes like "Ingenuo" by the legendary Pixinguinha sits alongside other vintage material and originals such as "Bolo de Fuba." The mix of clarinet, the four-string cavaquinho (which sounds a little like a mandolin), with six- and seven-string guitars and tambourine is attractive, bright and often endearing, and there's no doubt that these musicians can play. It's a testament to their skills that they make such complex music seem easy and open. Even the ballad "Pensando Em Ti," with its lyrical quality, has plenty going on. The musical style might be a bit of a novelty, but the music and the musicianship are superb. This is a little side road to be explored joyfully.
