More About This Book

Overview

Lance Henriksen is a Hollywood icon, with well over 150 films to his name. He's best known as the empathetic android Bishop in Aliens and the intuitive criminal profiler Frank Black in the TV series "Millennium," but he has also played gunfighters and gangsters, an astronaut, a vampire, a sadistic monk, Charles Bronson and Abraham Lincoln. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi... But this is just skimming the surface.

Henriksen is a true artist - a painter, a potter and a creative collaborator who brings complexity and humanity to all of his work by drawing on real life experiences that are often stranger than fiction. His biography, Not Bad for a Human, celebrates the actor's screen persona, film by film, band recounts the chaotic upbringing and early life experiences that shaped him - revealing the man behind the image. As Lance so candidly states, "This isn't just a book about me becoming an actor. It's about all the people I've crossed paths with over the years who have helped me flourish in spite of the chaos of my early life. It's about a lifelong process of becoming a human being."

    Highly Recommended

There are people out there, both famous and obscure, with fascinating lives that don't get an opportunity to tell their story, so the fact that through this book we are treated to one of the more engrossing and profound life experiences vicariously is really something.

I'm sure Joe Maddrey in preparing for this book realized the prolific output of Mr. Henriksen's oeuvre in film and television. The reviews and opinions on Mr. Henriksen's work are concise and informed. I can tell that Mr. Maddrey has a great enthusiasm and geniune respect for the work. It's refreshing to read an autobiography that steers clear of any vitriol or venom.

There are so many great stories here. There are accounts of the many times Mr. Henriksen has done his own stunts, gone that extra mile, studied with experts on riding, card tricks, and knife tricks. If it's possible for my already serious respect level to be raised, let's just say it has been.

Life was by no means easy for Mr. Henriksen as a kid and a young man, and yeah, that's a serious understatement. Some people never get past this kind of life, but a few make it through spectacularly. It's reassuring for me to know that you can trudge through difficulty and emerge with real dignity and conviction at the other end.

Mr. Henriksen loves what he does, and makes the hard work and commitment look easy. That's a true artist. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Get it, read it, and when you do, stop by Mr. Henriksen's facebook page and let him know what you think. I guarantee it will be worth your while.

We always have a synthetic on board.

This is a well written and interesting look at the life and times of Lance Henriksen. I love this guy as an actor, he seems to make any movie he shows up in better.

So why did I only give this 3 stars? Well, it turns out this guy has been in WAY more movies than I have seen him in - which wouldn't be a problem except most of these films I will probably never see and those parts didn't really hold my interest (I would consider this to be my fault - not the book's).

Of course I devoured the stuff about Alien, Terminator, Millennium, Hard Target, The X-Files and even the one-sentence mention of IGPX, but the rest of it almost seemed like homework. If you're interested, definitely check it out - this guy has had quite a life!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A FAN

This is more than a book about movies, this is a book about life, a journey of a boy under extreme conditions and his development into a man, it just so happens he became an accomplished actor, writer, potter, and father. There is so much more here than just the films of a legendary actor, there is a deep context about life and an amazing outlook from a man that should have never made it out alive, but that perseverance and drive is evident in everything he does including this book. Maddrey has effortlessly assembled the wisdom and adventure of Lance Henriksen in such a way that their voice almost becomes one, it is a very clever paring of two very talented people. You do not have to be a fan of any of the 150+ films Henriksen has been in, you don't even have to like him at all to thoroughly enjoy this book and relate to the material in a personal way (in fact I dare those that feel that way to read it and still honestly feel the same). In short, a very well written book that I am proud to own.

This Book Is for Anyone Humane or Human!

I have not yet seen all of Mr. Henriksen's films. I have just loved him in so many parts and felt he would be such an intersting and intense character that I had to sign up to get one of his signed hardback books. Now, finding out that the paperback has added movie photos and extra material, I will need one of those, too.

I could hardly bear to come to the end of the book. I read parts to my sons and my husband. They laughed and laughed at some and were touched by others. His childhood is very touching and somewhat similar to mine. He is not bitter about a difficult childhood but realizes it helped shape who he is and is not. Very refreshing attitude in our world of entitlement and scapegoating.

Mr. Henriksen is not only a natural born storyteller, he has lived such an intersting life in movies and art that his stories are not only entertaining but often witty, wise and thought provoking. Luckily, you can hear many wonderful podcasts on his site on Facebook. I love hearing his voice. Mr. Henriksen, how about an audio book of the biography...or extra stories that you did not yet share in the book? Many of your fans would love to hear anything you would care to read to us. I would love to hear you read poetry as I drive along in my car.

I am an avid reader and also love films. I especially love the little movies or independent films. I will sit through any drudge to catch a brilliant moment by one of my favorite actors. Mr. Henriksen is certainly one of those! One of my favorite characters from his long career is Sheriff Barnum from the movie, "Powder." I love him most in his sensitive fatherly roles. After reading this book, I will start to DVR or check out all his work. He mentions "Chains" and "Stone Cold" in his book and in his podcasts often presented on the Facebook page by his friend, Troy and others. I am going to watch them, too. Loved him in "Near Dark" and it was such a joy to hear him discuss the directors and other actors in his film ventures. He is a man you'd love to sit around the campfire with and listen to his stories and thoughts on life.

Hey, he is the hardest working man in films! So, we'll pray we get more stories. Anyone interested in films, living an artistic life, discussing philosophy, being a better person or just in the mood for a good read will love this book.
