"Not Just Us by Victoria Warren Jackson was written like a monologue of Shanna, the main character, during the timeframe that she lost her sister to AIDS. Shanna’s story starts abruptly and moves through scattered thought processes, chaotic emotions and random thoughts. It seemed like it was a therapy and perhaps a partial healing for Jackson to write this book on some level, even though the book is fictional. Technically, there were some grammatical fixes that I was surprised Jackson’s editor did not catch. The book portrays the hidden emotions and some of the taboos that people do not talk about watching someone they love die while at the same time dealing with family members, including her sister’s two children. Jackson brings out guilt, anger, depression, grief, and finally resolve that Shanna feels and then proceeds into action to change her life for the better and go forward. This was not a feel good book and made me think about what it would be like to lose a loved one and how I would react to that situation. This book is raw in its emotion and will resonate on different levels for each reader." TBR - TopBookReviewers
