Overview

Twenty years ago, one man's murderous rampage destroyed his own family . . . and devastated a community. Now the only survivor—his daughter—tells her story at last.

On April 14, 1989, for reasons still debated today, Mexican immigrant Ramón Salcido went on a violent rampage in the idyllic Sonoma Valley wine country where he lived and worked. In the course of just two hours, he killed his wife, Angela, her two younger sisters, his mother-in-law, and the man with whom he suspected Angela was having an affair. He then slashed the throats of his three young daughters—four-year-old Sophia, three-year-old Carmina, and twenty-two-month-old Teresa—leaving them for dead in the county dump. A little more than a day later, the bodies of his daughters were discovered. Miraculously, tiny Carmina was still alive and able to tell her rescuers, "My daddy cut me."

In Not Lost Forever, Carmina Salcido explores the events surrounding these headline-making murders with extraordinary clarity and composure. Reaching back to understand the events that traumatized her in childhood—and weaving them together with the recollections of detectives and witnesses—she reconstructs the story of her father's crimes, and their aftermath, in sobering detail.

Yet Carmina's story doesn't end there. Those who remember her as the tiny victim of these murders will also be shocked by what followed: how she was adopted by a Catholic extremist family who tried to change her name and bury her past; how she tried to escape their sheltering influence by joining a Carmelite convent and then a ranch for troubled girls; and how the psychological trials she endured along the way nearly broke her spirit—until, at last, she found peace by turning to the one relative still alive to share her grief: her grandfather.

As a young woman, Carmina returned to California to share her experiences and discover the family that was brutally taken from her. The devout Catholic also returned to look into her father's eyes on death row and confront the man who took away her entire family. With clear-eyed candor, courage, and grace, this brave young woman takes readers along on her miraculous journey of survival, discovery, and hope.

    Not Lost Forever"

I read this book in one day. It is an amazing story, and I would absoutely refer this book to all who have been threw a bad childhood and who thought that they would not make it through life. It is a story of love, family, home, children, jealously, murder, but the ending is happy---this little girl made it. When one reads this book, you will shed alot of tears and you will want to just meet this author and hug her and tell her that everything will be ok--not to worry. This is a very honest book that had to be very difficult to write.
Even though the reading will send chills up one's spine,it will also make you realize that when in doubt, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. An excellent Book!

Amazing true story - a must read.

This book caught my eye the moment I saw it. I bought it and sat up half the night reading it. I had finished it in 24 hours and have been thinking about it ever since. I actually plan to re-read it soon. The things that happened in this carefully told true story are horrifying and unforgettable, but it is told in a way that is careful, sensitive, thoughtful, and compassionate. You can't help but be caught up in the story or caring deeply for the little girl who survived, or proud of the strong, beautiful young woman who emerged from such a terrible darkness.

    Heartbreaking, wonderfully written

Heartbreaking story that I could not put down. Lots of details are in this book that have not been released elsewhere. I wish I could have adopted little Carmina to give her all the love she deserves!

Not Forever Lost by Carmina Salcido is about a three year old who survived after her father brutally murdered
her family and tried to murder her. I enjoyed this book because it was about how Carmina survived after
everything that happened to her. She was left with her sisters to die in the county dump after her father slit their
throats. She was the only one who survived out of his mother, grandmother, two aunts and two sisters.
Carmina's grandfather didn't think he could take care of her, so he put her up for adoption. She went to live with
a family named the Swindells who abused her and didn't let her go anywhere or see anything unless it was
with families the Swindells knew. I enjoyed this book because it showed how she fought and got through it,
and it makes me think that I can too if something bad happens, and I want to give up. Adults and young adults
would find this book sorrowful and gruesome at the beginning but happier at the end.

    Sad

Good book full of a long series of abuses. I had hoped the end would show some sign or some hope that she is on her own two feet, but it left a taste of her as still expecting her life to just be suddenly better as if she were owed it because of the bad things she had endured. Sadly she still seems to be using her past as her ticket to unearned rewards. I hope by now she has found steady work and can build a sense of self, an identity based on what she does with her life rather than on what was done to her.

I loved the book... We actually live in the house that she lived in after she was adopted. I thought the book was very interesting and really touching. It was very interesting to see pictures of our house in the book!

    A Truly Inspiring Story

After seeing a 20/20 interview with Carmina Salcido, I was hooked on this story. I ordered the book and read about Carmina's ordeal. I live about an hour away from where this awful event happened so I was immediately interested. I did not know the details but I remember when the news broke. Also the adults in this story are my peers. I am just so glad that Carmina not only survived but has become such a lovely person.

    I Also Recommend:

    HEARTBREAKING

An amazingly heartbreaking story of Carmina Salcido reliving the abusive and deadly life at the hands of her father. This book is a must read and needs to be a real eye opener for anyone who is in an abusive relationship! I also highly recommend everyone in an absuive relationship to read this book and get out before it's too late!! Carmina's book is proof of why. It is so terribly sad that Carmina still struggles with life today. My hope is that she can get the proper guidance. Thank you, Carmina, for sharing your story.

horrific, tragic, inspiring and wonderful all at the same time... a must read!!!

This book is horrific, tragic, inspiring and wonderful all at the same time. Her bluntness is refreshing and fascinating. Her tone when she describes the day that her Dad attempts to murder her is insane in a way that makes you want to know her. She is fascinating and lovable as an author. I don't think most people would survive the life that she had without being broken and she is so far from broken. Some spirits just aren't breakable.

I could not put this book down. I read the first 150 pages without taking a break I could hardly take breaks to use the bathroom or get a drink of water. It takes a phenomenal human being to be on the other end of what she's been through and to be able to articulate and write this book the way she did is truly amazing. I cannot put into words how much you have to read this book. It will change your life. Carmina Salcido will make you believe that there is a God--that is the only way. I remember the day this happened. My school was one of those on "lock-down" while she waited in that field all alone.. Her story is beyond inspiring, beyond hope, beyond all words. I am so glad that she is speaking. I am so glad that she is sharing with all of us what really happened that day. So many of us had wondered all this time and she gives us a piece of the picture. Thank you Carmina. All the best to you and your life. I wish you only happiness from now on.

A MUST READ - Rampage to Peaceful Spirit

I think Sonoma County residence will remember this case and this book tells the details of what happened to a little girl who said: " My daddy cut me." I was close to this case but read the book and read about my friends who were involved in this case and may still be until Ramon Salcido crosses over.As for Carmina, I hope that by writing this book gives her some closure but we all know, this event will stay with her for the rest of her life. She will be a stronger person because of it. I hope all is well will be with her and she will go forward with her life.
