Overview

On April 14, 1989, in California's idyllic Sonoma Valley, Mexican immigrant Ramón Salcido went on a rampage, killing his wife, her two younger sisters, his mother-in-law, and his wife's suspected lover. Then he slashed the throats of his three young daughters—ages four years, three years, and twenty-two months—and left them for dead in the county dump. A day later, when the children's bodies were finally discovered, three-year-old Carmina was miraculously still alive. "Daddy cut me," she told her rescuers.

In Not Lost Forever, Carmina Salcido reaches back into her traumatic past to reconstruct, in sobering detail, her father's crimes and their aftermath. Recalling with clear-eyed candor, courage, and grace the horrific event and troubled childhood that followed, a remarkable young woman carries readers along on her miraculous journey of survival, discovery, and hope.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
A bloody story of murder and survival, combined with the author's account of her life afterward, assisted by true-crime vet Jackson (Love Me to Death, 2002, etc.). Salcido was not quite three years old in 1989 when her father slit her throat and left her to die in a dump in California's Sonoma Valley. That same night, he also killed her two sisters, her mother, her grandmother and the man he suspected of being his wife's lover. Some parts of the book-the prologue, epilogue and certain sections of chapter-are clearly identified as Jackson's work. Others, presented as being narrated by Salcido, are based not on personal recollections but on newspaper articles, court documents and interviews with detectives and witnesses. The final chapters chronicle Salcido's life after the murders. Her grandfather-a member of a politically, religiously and culturally reactionary Catholic organization, the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property-felt unable to care for Salcido and arranged for her adoption by a Midwestern family that belonged to the arch-conservative group. Isolated, lonely and poorly home-schooled, Salcido got away at age 17 by joining a Carmelite order. When bouts of depression made life in the convent impossible, she was asked to leave. Her next refuge was a center for troubled girls called God's Cowgirl Ranch. Alarmed by the harshness of discipline there, she turned for help to her grandfather, who took her in, as did two uncles later on. Once she was living a more normal life, the details of which she skims over, Salcido began researching the story of the murders and got in touch with people familiar with the case. As part of her efforts to come to terms withher past, she contacted her father on death row in San Quentin; her attempts to understand him are genuinely moving. Succeeds as a vivid reconstruction of a gruesome crime and the capture and trial of the murderer, but the appended memoir is sketchy.

    Not Lost Forever"

I read this book in one day. It is an amazing story, and I would absoutely refer this book to all who have been threw a bad childhood and who thought that they would not make it through life. It is a story of love, family, home, children, jealously, murder, but the ending is happy---this little girl made it. When one reads this book, you will shed alot of tears and you will want to just meet this author and hug her and tell her that everything will be ok--not to worry. This is a very honest book that had to be very difficult to write.
Even though the reading will send chills up one's spine,it will also make you realize that when in doubt, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. An excellent Book!

Amazing true story - a must read.

This book caught my eye the moment I saw it. I bought it and sat up half the night reading it. I had finished it in 24 hours and have been thinking about it ever since. I actually plan to re-read it soon. The things that happened in this carefully told true story are horrifying and unforgettable, but it is told in a way that is careful, sensitive, thoughtful, and compassionate. You can't help but be caught up in the story or caring deeply for the little girl who survived, or proud of the strong, beautiful young woman who emerged from such a terrible darkness.

    A Truly Inspiring Story

After seeing a 20/20 interview with Carmina Salcido, I was hooked on this story. I ordered the book and read about Carmina's ordeal. I live about an hour away from where this awful event happened so I was immediately interested. I did not know the details but I remember when the news broke. Also the adults in this story are my peers. I am just so glad that Carmina not only survived but has become such a lovely person.

    HEARTBREAKING

An amazingly heartbreaking story of Carmina Salcido reliving the abusive and deadly life at the hands of her father. This book is a must read and needs to be a real eye opener for anyone who is in an abusive relationship! I also highly recommend everyone in an absuive relationship to read this book and get out before it's too late!! Carmina's book is proof of why. It is so terribly sad that Carmina still struggles with life today. My hope is that she can get the proper guidance. Thank you, Carmina, for sharing your story.

horrific, tragic, inspiring and wonderful all at the same time... a must read!!!

This book is horrific, tragic, inspiring and wonderful all at the same time. Her bluntness is refreshing and fascinating. Her tone when she describes the day that her Dad attempts to murder her is insane in a way that makes you want to know her. She is fascinating and lovable as an author. I don't think most people would survive the life that she had without being broken and she is so far from broken. Some spirits just aren't breakable.

I could not put this book down. I read the first 150 pages without taking a break I could hardly take breaks to use the bathroom or get a drink of water. It takes a phenomenal human being to be on the other end of what she's been through and to be able to articulate and write this book the way she did is truly amazing. I cannot put into words how much you have to read this book. It will change your life. Carmina Salcido will make you believe that there is a God--that is the only way. I remember the day this happened. My school was one of those on "lock-down" while she waited in that field all alone.. Her story is beyond inspiring, beyond hope, beyond all words. I am so glad that she is speaking. I am so glad that she is sharing with all of us what really happened that day. So many of us had wondered all this time and she gives us a piece of the picture. Thank you Carmina. All the best to you and your life. I wish you only happiness from now on.
